New Hobby - Golf

Well, after most of my friends started, I figured I'd give it a shot. So, I've taken up Golfing.

Any sound advice??

because if you fall in love w/ this sport, you'll be busy fixing your bad habits and they're very hard to break!!!

also alot of it has to do w/ watching and learning. watch others and figure out what they're doing wrong. watch alot of the pro's swing to get a better feel.

camera/video stuff helps too btw.

just have fun! Don't try to hit it hard (pretend you're hitting an egg) - sounds funny but it definitely works for me. Let the club do the work and not your arms.

I agree with Good Times - take at least one lesson from a pro so you learn the fundamentals to a good swing and proper contact with the ball. Also, don't waste money on expensive balls - I had one of the best rounds of my life a couple of weeks ago using an ugly old ball I found in the woods - it was a "Noodle" brand I hit an awesome drive on the next tee with it and started hitting one good shot after another, it was all mental I think. Also, be sure to watch Caddyshack to learn proper course etiquette

You do realize that you're going to have to decide which gets more of your money -- golf or the 4Runner.....

Golf is the most frustrating game I've ever tried. Just remember that you're out there to have fun, not to win lots of $$$$.

Thanks everyone for the responses!!! I actually took my first lesson yesterday to learn the fundamentals. It's definitely harder than it looks. But I think my 4Runner will always the deciding vote when I want to spend money !!!! Gotta love my 4Runner !!!!

i was @ walmart today and saw a set of dunlop clubs on sale for $100 (original price $160). is this set a good buy? i'm looking into getting my own clubs instead of borrowing my friend's beater clubs everytime we go out to hit a bucket. i want to get a set that can last me a long while but is still decent.

Define good clubs?? If you have the money, good clubs can be found at your local pro shop. If you are just starting, those walmart clubs should be fine. I picked up a set of semi good/ok clubs at a place called Galaxy Golf. They are a set of Ram Clubs. If I had the money I would have went with Adams or TaylorMade or if I really had money I would get a complete set of Callaway Clubs.
