New JVC KW AVX740

Just finished installing a new JVC KW AVX740 headunit which I got for $400. Man, I didn't know all I was missing. This thing is loaded with Bluetooth (phone and audio streaming), DVD player, USB and Aux, not to mention a ton of other add-ons (Sat ready, HD radio ready, back up cam ready). Just the sound improvement alone is insane and I just have stock non-JBL speakers. One of the things I love the most is how the whole face is detachable so when your in a bad area you can just hide the screen.

I agree with what you said about the speakers: I got a JVC as well and it's amazing what the stock speakers are capable of. I think there is also a space in the 4th gen for a sub woofer in the back panel by the rear passenger side tire area. I am tempted to upgrade even more.

I have this unit as well and yes, you loose your steering wheel controls. You can however, get a unit to regain your controls. I've yet to install it in my 4Runner... I need to get that done soon.

It's a great head unit but has it's quarks...

I ordered the Metra steering wheel kit which gives me full usage of my controls and it autoprogramed itself perfectly.

This unit is awesome. Coming from the stock stereo, this thing is night and day. Is the difference just the size of the screen on the 840 vs. the 740?

Yeah trying to get a stereo that had all the features I wanted plus looked OEM was one of the biggest things for me. I didn't want something that looked cheesy or out of place.

Haha, yeah I hear you. I know for sure I want to do a sub and that side storage compartment would be great. Just gotta see if I can find an actual housing out of another 4runner or if Toyota sells them. Thinking about throwing a JL or Alpine Type R 10" in there if they'll fit, otherwise a 10-12" in a sealed box. If you end up doing it soon, let me know how it turns out.

That's a sweet head unit too! For about the same price i went with the pioneer 3300bt. The sweet thing about these head units is that you can add so much stuff to them! (like HD or Satellite radio or GPS) The other reason i bought a head unit was to hook up my ipod and two headrest screens to them. Pioneer and Kenwood are awesome head units that will be the center of your entertainment system in your car! I know what you mean by the audio sound being like night and day. Don't know how much of an audiophile you are, but i rip all my songs in FLAC format (lossless quality about 1000 kbps for each song) and i can really hear the difference with the new head unit!
