i noticed that k&n has a new intake for 05/06 v8's and was wondering if anyone installed it and if there is a noticable difference. i was thinking about getting the volant but have read about many fitment issues in this forum. i'm figuring k&n should probably fit perfectly but want to hear from people who actually have it installed already. it is listed for $306.74. here is the link: http://shop.knfilters.com/KNShop/Product.aspx?pid=63-9029

If you have read other threads you woulde have seen that many people have had issues with the volant kit. Your not going to get 17 hp from a cold air kit. Ive been dealing wih cars for 10 years and have dynoed plenty of cars adding performance parts and 17 hp is a little off, maybe 8-10!!! Just my opinion but Ive seen it first hand many times.

I'm sure they've sorted out the shipping issues with the kit by now. And how can you argue with me about the power? I proved the results in my thread! The samples were taken on the same dyno as my baseline at similar temperature and pressures (similar SAE correction factors). I don't understand why you wouldn't believe that an intake gave 7% additional power? The range is usually 5-10%. If you've seen it first hand many times, then you would know that the size of the engine makes a big difference in how much power is gained in percentage, not just 8-10 for every engine. For example, you may expect only an additional 5 HP for a 4 cylinder engine, but you would expect much more for a larger displacement engine.

That being said, had the K&N been out at the same time as the Volant I probably would've bought the K&N, just because I knew they were a more established aftermarket company. But after having the Volant and seeing how it looks in the engine bay and how it sounds inside the heat shielding box (not some gay air dam that's made of metal, a fantastic conductor of heat I might add...), I decided that I'm happy with my purchase. Why don't you post up some pictures so everyone can see how your kit looks in the engine bay? Additionally, given that they are nearly identical in construction (filter size and tube size) I'm sure the K&N has the potential to make as much power. The Volant is also the same price as the K&N if you order it through Jason Burtman (www.burtmanindustries.com).

Did you actually do the dyno pull? I can do 10 consecutive pulls on the same car and every time get a different reading. Just because you got 17hp more with 1 dyno pull dont think that the intake automatically gave you that. There are many different factors. Im not trying to argue because I like the volant kit but I have heard a lot of issues which Im sure they did sort out by now. You will not get 17hp more by adding an intake. Just out of curiosity where did they dyno your car at? The 05's have 280 hp stock right?? If thats true then you should have about 310 or so.

You are both right! 17 hp is high but there is a reason; the FI was remapped and the aftermarket exhaust may have contributed/complimented to the total gain for the intake. If the Volant or K&N was installed without an exhaust and remapped they would probably create approx the same gains. The more important aspect to me would be which provides the best filtration. A baseline UOA should be done with the stock air filter and then with the aftermarket to see if contaminants/dirt are getting into the engine. In the past some K&N filters have had a poor showing.

I have nothing to add on the current topic, however I'm keenly interested in what software you used to remap the OEM PCM, what trims were adjusted, which fuel cells, were you lean or rich with your bolt-ons (my guess is lean, but ya never know)?

If you could provide the details of it, I'd be most appreciative.

Thanks!

No I did not do the dyno pulls, it was against the shop's insurance policy, so one of their guys who dyno's many many vehicles on that specific dyno did 3 pulls while I stood there and watched, each around 17 HP gain for the intake. It's important to remember that I did the intake pull BEFORE I installed the PCU, therefore those gains are compared to my baseline I did a few months ago where the only performance mods I had were a K&N drop-in and the catback exhaust. Koz may have a good point, the catback may have helped boost the intake readings, but I did NOT have the PCU installed at that point. After dyno tuning I realized another 8-10 WHP, this is all documented in my thread. I had the truck dynoed at MAC Autosport in Parker, CO - they are one of the busiest AWD dynos in the country (www.macautosport.com).

The '05-'06 V8 4Runners come from the factory with about 260 HP at the crank or around 207 AWHP. As shown in my thread my baseline with catback exhaust is 210 AWHP, after adding the intake its 227 AWHP. The final tuning was done with the PCU resluting in an additional 8-10 WHP for a total of about 235 AWHP and 271 AWFT-LBS (many pulls resulted in an average of around 238/271), with a 21% driveline loss this equates to about 300 crank HP and 340 crank ft-lbs of torque.

For the question by KnightFire about the software remapping; I used the Split Second PSC1-001 Performance Calibration Unit. I'm not sure exactly what inputs they took, but the way they have it configured, it basically tricks the computer into leaning out the air-fuel mixture to ideal levels (12.8-13.0:1 for max power). The ECU kept the air-fuel mix at a slightly rich 11.9:1 no matter what mods were added. We did about 10 pulls on the dyno while adjusting the fuel trim with a laptop based on what the wideband O2 was showing for A/F ratio. By tuning the mixture throughout the rpm band, to about 12.8:1, I was able to gain around 8 peak WHP and a large wedge of low end torque. Throttle response is much better. It is important to note that the tuning was done with the intake and catback to realize max power from each performance mod. For more info, check out my thread I posted above.

Thanks, I've been looking for something like this for the 4runner...appreciate it!

Installed Volant 3 months ago, had issues when I got the kit since there no mounting holes on box. Returned (box only) to Volant & got replacement back in 4 days.
Thanks to Volant install/issues postings made by 4Runner forum members, installed CAI with no issues at all. Looks great, sound great & feels great when accelerating.

Best forum I ever joined & members are very helpful & responsive.
