I have a 1990 Toyota 4Runner with the v6 (the v6 where the knock sensor is under the intake manifold). The computer was throwing out a code of a malfunctionaing knock sensor. So I replaced the sensor. The timing belt was not removed, so timing was not changed. Took me all day (8 hours). Finally got everything back together. Started right up. However, it has a rough idle, absolutly no power, cant get the car to get past 35-40 mph. The RPM's go up to 4-5k but the car acts like the parking brake is on. The computer does not have any codes any more. Spend hours following vacuum hoses and electical plugs, to find everything hooked up correctly. I unplug the throttle possition sensor and the engine idle speeds up. I am so frustrated, can any one help please! The engine is not running hot, and the EGR valve seems to be hooked up right. If the computer is not thowing out a code, what could it be? PLEASE HELP!

Is it throwing any new codes for the new problem? Did you reset the ECU after installing the new sensor?
It almost sounds as if there is an exhaust leak around the egr valve (ticking and air moving sound) but there isn't one. The sound is only there at idle, rev it up the engine will rev up, and the exhaust leak sound goes away (might be because I just can't hear it anymore over engine noise). Barely idles, rough and real low. Almost as if there was a vacuum leak but can't find one. Different positions on the throttle will have different power (dead positions on throttle) but still at about 10% of what it should be.
Timing was actually off on one side, don't know how I missed that, feel stupid. fixed most of running problem. Thanks for the help. Runs better more power. Check engine light on again!!!!! Frustrated! Is there a way to retrieve the new code without taking it to the shop who has the ECM diagnostic computer on a 1990 4r with 3v v6 engine auto trans. The 4R has low and rough idle, will literally die at a stop sign, not steady idle either (it's like I feather the throttle a little). Trans is confused and hard to get it to shift down or into OD. Hope it's not the knock sensor again (and yes I did replace wiring harness). Timing is spot on! New wires, plugs! Please help Thanks again!
My bad little frustrated. Three mechanics, two sensors (TPS, knock sensor), one wiring loom (knock sensor), and those two sensors were replaced twice. Lots of $$$$$$ so far. Please help!
Problems:

Trans: confused! Won't shift down when peddle push to the floor, on the freeway the trans won't shift into overdrive (at 4-5k on freeway). Rapid shifts on cruse control, Shifted into first on freeway, thank you rev limiter. Can shift it manually just fine, except OD (which is electronic button on shifter)
Engine: sluggish, bogged down, lots of fuel consumption!!, rough idle (dies at stops), when cold and throttle at 5% there is a dead spot that kills the engine, no pinging, surges at idle.
Brakes: say I am coming off the freeway on the offramp, as your coming up to the intersection you start with slight pressure then slowly push the brakes on when you get down to 30-35 mph the 4r pushes back pushed up the peddle then slamming on the brakes with no input from me. Locking up only the front wheels.
Stock alarm and keyless entry: The alarm will go off with no provocation. I was even driving down the road and the doors locked and the alarm went off.
I don't know if they are all connected in some way, but please someone help! The Japanese specialist had 7 4runners in there for the knock sensor, wow Toyota needs to do something about that!
