New Location for Rear Diff Breather Ext.

I thought I would put up a post with my mod for the relocation of the rear diff breather. I really did not want to cut into the rubber gasket around the fuel filler so I found a new way to do it which puts the breather in the jack storage area (I think it will stay much cleaner in this location and takes away any concern about fuel getting in the breather itself).

The first two pics show the location of the rubber grommet/plug I found in the jack storage. More pics to follow...

Here are the next pics... the first shows the general area where the zip tie pokes through under the car (I used the zip tie as a guide to find where things were going).

The second picture on this post is taken just beyond the tow hook and the body mount seen in the first pic.

The third pic is shown looking up where you see the tip of the zip tie in the second picture.

These pics show the plug once removed (just pull on it, comes out pretty easy) and after I drilled a hole in it to put the hose through (same 1/4 inch fuel line used by others).

Here are the pics once I put the plug back in and zip tied the hose to it's location where the jack is stored and to frame. I connected it to the same union used by others and reused the factory breather.

that would suck if the diff was overfilled and it came up through the breather tube. that shit is pungent, i don't think you'd ever get rid of the smell in the cabin.

i ran mine along the frame to the engine bay but that looks like a really nice solution for people who dont want to run it to the fuel filler door.

I routed the breather tube in my 88' 4runner the same way. Every now and then though I would smell the diff fluid inside the truck. Not really a big deal, the smell was never bad enough to open the windows for ventilation. This will probably be the same way I do mine in my new 4runner as well. Thanks for the pics and the write up. It's nice to know what to expect prior to doing a mod.

I ran mine rear diff and e-locker breathers into the jack area about 6 weeks ago and have not detected any smells so far.

Great idea and write-up. I hav'nt done mine yet but this is the way I'll be doing mine.

i'm sure under normal conditions, this routing works fine. i would just be worried if it did overflow (it can happen). great job and write-up though. i like the idea of running to the engine bay.

It is supposed to create an escape of gases so that if a heated rear differential is submerged in water cooling it quickly the vacuum created inside the differential (if a closed system) could potentially draw water in through any seals.

Well according to Toyota the people who built your truck , you can already go through water deeper than the axel now with the factory set up like the last 40 years have shown us . But this is a mod if you go in water a lot I guess , or use your toy as a boat regularly. Of course there's plenty of other breathers , like the transmission, transfer case ,front axle ,ADD system ,air intake. that will now be submerged but yep your rear axle will be dry for the tow home.

We ended up relocating it to the gas port area. But as pointed out there's so many potential areas for water to get in, it's cheap peace of mind, but going deep enough to need things like breathers and snorkels usually comes with a lot of other potential damage as well.
