New LTX M/S's from Costco-Goodbye Revos! What Pressure?

Ok...just got back from Costco and got 4 new 265/70-17 LTX M/S's installed for $826 (includes $80 rebate they have going on right now). I also didnt have any issues with Costco when it came to putting the 70 series on rather than the "listed" OEM 65 series. I know some people have had issues with that, and there was NO FRIGGIN WAY I was going to put on the Cross Terrains, especially since their price jumped from $160 to $220!!!

The Revos I had started getting really loud on the highway (sounded like BFG KO's!) and in the rain they were definitely starting to lose their grip---all this with 55,000 miles on them. They were wearing fast, especially during the past 10,000 miles. By the way, when I replaced them I could just see the top of Washingtons head on a quarter, so they lasted pretty ok. There was no way that they would make it through the winter. I personally wont ever get another set of them.

My question is, what are all of you running for pressure in your LTX M/S? I had revos, which I always ran at 38psi. But the side of the LTX's say max pressure is 35psi? Sounds low to me.

Price Increase

One can only assume that when the price jumps 27% from $160.00 to $220.00 that this is Michelin's way of wanting to say good bye to the Cross Terrains and only make the LTX's.

What other explanation could there be?

Those Hankook DynaPros got real good reviews by consumer reports as do the Continentals on Tirerack.

I for one will not spend $220.00 a tire even though I have the Cross Terrains now!

55k is good ON any set of tires imo. I have 48k on mine , run them at 40 , yes I can hear them but not really sure if anymore then stock , still good in rain / wet weather driving. This is the longest I have kept any tire on , they are usually gone by 40-45k because I don't like tires that are wore that far. Only reason these are still on is because of it being summer and I have not had time to play off road .

Why did you go with a less aggressive tire ? or that tire in particular. ? just curious.

Lately for some reason I have been seeing more and more Nokian tires here . Never saw them before around here .

I decided to go with this tire because for the price I thought it was an outstanding tire. Costco had them in stock, and all the reviews that i have seen about this tire are simple put "outstanding." I usually only drive on-road, so I didnt need anything too aggressive, and Michelins have a low rolling resistance, therefore the MPG's should go up *slightly*. I will have to see if that happens. I should point out that they are one of the smoothest riding tires I have EVER experienced! All I can say is WOW! Also, based on the tire rack reviews, over half the people got 75ooo+ miles on a set, with some going over 100ooo! My buddie actually has these on his Tacoma, and he alone has 65ooo miles on them, and they are only half way worn down! I mean, you just cant beat that! I cant state how Nokians are as i have NEVER seen them on the road, but I decided to go with a name brand, and you cant beat Costco's free lifetime road hazard/balancing/rotations!


By the way, I have gone offroading in my bud's truck with these tires, and never got stuck. We went thru some crazy VA clay-mud too!
 
Good to hear . Are they the LTX or the LTX AT/2 , both seem to get pretty good reviews and by a VISUAL stand point dont look very aggressive.

My Revos have givin me good milage , so thats why I'm hesitating to switch.

I would guess that hi milage tires have a harder compound . Just a guess , I really have idea of what I speak of ....lol.

About pressures , I think you have to play with them until you find a happy medium for yourself. I had to do that with Revos.
 
They are the LTX M/S, not the A/T2's. They ride is MUCH better than on the Revos, and I am not sure if you know or not but I was a huge REVO fan from the start. After 35k miles though, they started feeling a little sketchy in the rain (tried tire pressures from 32-38psi), and this past winter when we had some bad snow/ice mixes they werent very predictable. One second they would be ok, then they would just give out on their grip. Also, the Revos wore down extremely slowly until about 35k miles, looking like new for what seemed to be forever. Then, they started wearing down quicker than the stock Dunlops. I even slowed down my speeds and starting driving like a grandmother to increase my gas mileage, but they still wore fast.

I just finished my first tank of gas and I calculated 20.6 MPG (calculated with miles driven and gallons to fill, NOT using the computer which is always WAY off), with a lot of that being city driving (aka-stop and go). A lot of miles for 1 days time, but I had to do a lot of errand running while I was off from work!

I dont think they have a harder compound...but then again I have no idea why they wear like iron. Even at 35psi (which it states on the sidewall as being the max pressure), they are super comfy and responsive to steering inputs. I know that when I got over 35psi on the Revo's, you knew that those things were pumped up. You could feel all the little bumps in the road, and most pebbles! I dont regret the switch at all, and especially since they are about the same price as the Revo's. Plus, you cant beat Costco's tire services. Even if the Revos were able to be special ordered thru Costco like I had done before, I wouldnt have purchased them again. Now---to see how the winter goes with some snow! I know my friends Tacoma is sure footed with these, so I dont expect any problems.
 
Just wanted to update everyone on how these tires are performing:

1) I need to go back to Costco, as I am getting a bit of shimmy from the front tires at 65+mph. I know the right front took a "lot of weight" per the tire tech. I think either the stick on weights became loose or I might have lost some of them.

2) My MPG has actually gone DOWN (yes, down!) from my Revos. However, I was running my Revos at 38psi, and the best I can do with the LTX's are 35. I went from on average from my house to Williamsburg, VA and back on the Revos about 20.5mpg (calculated by me, not the stupid and wrong computer) and with the LTX's I could only manage 19.1mpg for the same trip doing the same speeds. However, the LTX's are WAY more comfy.

So how are they working out for you ? Did you get the shimmy fixed ? What was the problem ??

Running at lower pressure reduces rolling resistance , may be the gas milage difference.

I just put a new set of Revos on , and anytime you put a new set of tires on the ride much better than the ones that had 55k on them, goes without saying.

I noticed a ride getting worse as the tire wore on as with any tire. There is no way a tire even with 40k on it will ride as good as it does with 20k , it just won't happen, and IMO it's foolish to run a tire up to 75k , it gets hard , starts to dryrot , ect.... not to mention severely diminished tread wear resulting possibly in unsafe traction.

Keep us updated on the Mich's .
 
Ok---for another update.

The tires WERE indeed out of balance. The guys at Costco re-balanced them and they are great now! No issues at all. Also, the mileage is back up there! I consistantly get 19.5+ mpg's with them set at 34psi cold, which is about what I was getting with the Revos at 38psi (were hard as hell at that point!). They are so much quieter, and smoother over imperfections in the road. I recently had to go "off-roading" through some serious VA clay and didnt have any issues. Much better than the Revos as they turned into solid donuts in the clay.

I am much happier with the LTX's, and feel as though they are a better fit for what I wanted than with the Revos.
 
I drive a 2006 SE 4x4...I need to change the stock tires dunlops 265/65/17...I was actually thinking on those LTX M/S 265/70/17 from Michein...I'm glad I found this forum thread, do you have pictures? with the new LTX m/s...do they rub at all?
 
I have not noticed any rubbing at all with these tires. I am running them at their max pressure (35psi cold) and have found that they are running their best at that pressure. I love them so far!
 
Nice, I have been wanting these tires for a short while and have had trouble locating them in 17". Now I know where to go. And thus far, from my shopping around, Costco has the lowest price on the Michelin LTX M/S in my area. I still need to try Discount Tire though...
