Want to start by saying so far this seems to be a pretty cool place and a good group of folks. So I've made a pretty big change from my 2006 Chevy 2500 4x4 diesel crew cab to a much more fuel economic 4 runner. so far im really pleased with the truck but have some hang ups, only 2 really. 1st why do my 12v outlets stop working when i shut off my car and nore importantly can this be easily modified so i can charge my damn gps wont have to reboot everytime i stop at a jobsite. 2nd is there anyway to turn off my traction control and leave it in 2wd.

As for the new 4r details, sorry i didnt post the first go around i was hung up messing with the photo thing, she is a 2004 4x4 limited v6. looked into the v8 but didnt see a whole lot of hp gain and there was a bit more weight. so far i have not been able to get her stuck in the mud and it is a great daily driver.

thanks in advance and ill put some pics of the new girl as soon as i figure that out

WELCOME!!!!! Glad you are here! This site will give you almost every tidbit of information that you will probably ever need regarding your T4R.

He mentioned that he has the V6, which has selectable 2Hi and 4Hi modes. There should be a dial on the dash to the right of the steering wheel which allows you go go from 2wd to 4wd.

Oh, and welcome!

Looks like you've got yourself a Sport Edition there, not a Limited. Nice truck.

yup you are right. lol one would think id at least get that right, i mean its written prominently on the side.

well have the morning off so decided to tackle a few things. so far have removed the HC filter and replaced the factory air filter with a K&N. Now I'm going to take care of the 12v plug issue. If it wasn't for this forum id be getting frustrated with that rather than enjoying my new baby. Thanks guys!

As for the condition i drove from Orlando to Tampa to look at it and saw the condition and pulled the trigger immediately. she has some miles on her but i have never come across a used truck that is in this good of shape. I can only hope the previous owner was as careful with the mechanical side of things as he was cosmetic. comparing it to a brand new car i would give it a 9.5 out of 10. there are literally 2 scratches, one small door ding smaller than a dime and the only thing i found with the interior is there is a small crack in the dash that is starting to form. I just pray she is mechanically sound because im gonna be driving the piss out of this thing off road once i complete the traction control issue.

yes there is a selector switch for the 4x4 (hi, lo, and 2x4) and left of the wheel is the center diff lock out. I am a little confused about what systems are actually on this truck and what those systems actually do, it does have the down hill assist too.

So this is what i think i know (please set me straight if needed). The VSC is a combination of traction control, throttle, and brake system to keep people from understear and flipping the darn thing. this system says it is not active until the car is above 15mph but when i was off road the other day it was active in 4x4 hi at very low speed, well something was active maybe just traction control? when i switched to 4lo and locked the center diff there was still something active. Im not looking to do burnouts of black top but i would like to disable all safety features for off road. another thing, i was playing with the DHA and it sounded like it was having trouble. this was in Florida in very soft sugar sand so maybe the abs was having trouble with that.

here are the dash pics.

Check the link Rocket61 provided it will give you all the information you need about the traction control. Unless your truck came equipped with a trac off switch the write up provided is the only way to disable the trac controls without locking the center diff. Make sure you read through your owners manual for a more in depth description of how the 4wd system should be used. It's advised that you only lock the center diff while on dirt or sand and not for use on pavement.

Well so far so good on the mini mods I have done. Have my cell phone and gps charging without the car running. Removed HCair filter and replaced stock air filter with K&N drop in air filter. Decided to dump a whole bottle of sea foam in the tank just to feel like i did something to clean out the fuel system. Now i am thinking about taking on the trac issue. Did have a little scare though, after completing the charger mod i started the truck and it died after a few revolutions. I assume it could have had something to do with the disconnected battery during the process. Thats what im going to tell myself anyhow... BTW how much fuel does this truck hold?

The tank is 22 gallons.

So not much progress since i last posted... mainly i have been doing more damage than constructive activities. i did use the 3m headlight restorer kit and got those babies crystal clear again... Saturday i went to help my brother-in-law sight in his new 308 which he said was dead on. Way off!! about twenty clicks in elevation and a few left. I got her hitting a quarter at 250 yrds by the time we left though. by the time we left i had also ran over a cinder block sized SOLID peice of concrete that really tested my skid plate. really caused no damage other than a few scratches to the under carriage. Now she is starting to feel like my truck! LOL.

So my hold up on the TRAC mod has been finding the switch id like to use. my local dealer has nothing in stock and said they are not able to order them. of course this was the Saturday parts guy and i believed him for exactly 0 seconds. but is there a better place to find the replacement switches that fit the holes in my dash. I want the same style but i don't care how its labeled. tomorrow im going to visit my local junk yard to see if i can find something that will work.

Yeah, that's normal after disconnecting the battery for a period of time. The ECM has to reset itself and during it's reset, the motor cuts off (within 2 to 5 seconds of the motor starting up. My '05 V6 does that EVERY time I disconnect the batter for longer than 10 minutes. So, no worries.
