1st 4runner purchase advice (what to look for)

i just joined the group. i don't yet have a 4runner or other truck. my mom has a rav4, my bro has a 96 tacoma, and i have a 94 celica. we all love our vehicles. but now that i got my celica paid off, i want a truck. there is nothing that could get me to stray from toyota. i'm looking preferable for an older 4runner, but would definitely "settle" for the right tacoma/pickup if found. i'm looking for a winter mobile (HAS to have 4wd)(without it there's no way i'd get it), and has to be able to go offroading in the summer. i live in michigan and there are LOTS of places to go offroading. dunes, the woods, mudboggin, etc. i'm looking to spend about $2-3000 on the vehicle itself and then put more money into upgrading it to make it better off-road. does anyone have any suggestions on what i should try and look for (year, model)? and why/why not?

and holy crap are they hard to find! no one wants to sell their toyota truck/suv no matter what condition it's in! anyone know of any good ways to help me locate a truck for me? (i've been using www.autotrader.com but haven't gotten lucky yet.

You may want to look at the 1st gen 4runners, which are very tough (but primitive in features). They have solid axles front and rear. With a little cash, you can really modify the crap out of them!:)

good luck with your search.

Run for the border

Since you can`t find any in Michigan try going north to Canada!
We have lots of 4Runner`s and Trucks here. Look up www.autotrader.ca under trucks and start looking. I would ask US customs about taking one across the border before I got too serious. Don`t forget about the exchange rate of the dollar. One US dollar is worth about $1.25 Canadian so $3000.00 is now worth about $3750.00.:D

yeah, it sucks cuz i want one but the demand is so high and the supply is so low in this area that it's next to impossible to find a good one for a decent price.
