Hey guys checking in from honolulu hawaii. i am new to the forums, and i am looking at at 98 4runner with 140,000 miles on it. automatic 4WD. v6.

according to the owner it originated from new york, but i know salt does a number to cars here in hawaii.

i read a little bit on the forums and apparently 140miles on a 4runner is not a lot at all..

is there anything i should look for before i buy the suv?

rust points? maintenance issues? drive select?

Rust, look at the bumpers, frame rocker panels. ETC. After that its regular maintanence, like the timing belt, water pump...

2X on the rust issues! I've kept mine at bay by undercoating it with oil. I also spray inside all of the door panels, hatch, fenders and quarter panels. Alot of people think I'm crazy, but my 12 yr old 4Runner is looking pretty good for a truck that see's so much salt!

Most if not all of the rust you do see, was there when I bought the rig, used in 2004. The previous owner, never undercoated it, and really didn't take too much care of the paint either. I've been spraying it anually, and wax it once a year, with NUFINISH and it's been keeping pretty good.

Nice to see another member from Hawaii.

Regarding the 4runner you were looking at, make sure that the seller has the maintenance records. Check to see that the basic maintenance has been done (engine oil, etc.) at the right times. The timing belt should have been changed once already (90k intervals), and the other fluids (ATF, diffs, transfer) should have been changed at least once too.

Aside from maintenance history, looking at it in person should tell you whether its a good find or no go. And yes, 140k miles isn't much for a 4runner. :biggrin2:
