New member- looking at Toyota 4Runner- need help!!!

Hi, everyone I'm new to the forum, and looking to buy a Toyota.


I was looking to buy my girlfriend, a used 4Runner, and wanted to ask a few questions.

I've always heard, good things about Toyota cars in general, and the 4Runner as one of the best SUV on the market.


i was looking at 99-04 4Runner (my budget) as a second car.

1: I seen (at Car Dealer) a 2002 "4Runner limited" w/46,ooo miles excellent shape asking price $19,900

what would be a fair price to offer dealer!!!



2: (private seller) 2000 "4Runner limited" w/57000 miles, excellent shape he's asking $14,500

what would be a fair price to offer to privat seller.




sorry for asking, so many questions, just want to get some info from real Toyota owners and not some book or dealer!!

1st, a dealer will want more for the same vehicle than a private party. They have to offer a minimal warranty at least and make a profit.

2nd, used vehicle prices vary greatly thru out the US, so any answer not from your area would be worthless.

Check the used car resources in your area for going prices for comparable trucks and go from there.

I live in illinois (chicagoland area) prices seem to vary from year to year.

these SUVs seem to hold their value well....

also, would you say the car is worth, what the bank will loan you for the SUV

There are two very good sources for car price information. One is Kelley Blue Book ( http://www.kbb.com ) and the other is Edmund's Used Car Prices ( http://www.edmunds.com ). One of them tends to be a bit on the high side, while the other is a tad low. Average the two of them together and you may get an accurate indicator of what such vehicles are "worth" in your market. There should be a place on the web site where you can enter your ZIP code.

Once you get some information there, perhaps you should consider shopping the web pages of various large used-car dealers in your area; or check out the on-line version of the Auto Trader ( http://www.traderonline.com ) magazine in your region.

Prices vary greatly for SUVs, and you may be able to save a few grand if you are willing to travel a few hours. Heck, you can find some good deals on eBay as well ( http://www.ebaymotors.com ).

First, do exactly what Jeff said about KBB and Edmunds. For the '02, keep in mind that the dealer paid trade-in/wholesale value for the vehicle, or less if the guy that traded it in didn't make a good deal! The dealer has to make money on the transaction, but you should be able to get them down near the "private party" price. Dealers need to start high so that they can negotiate down.

Here's another indicator: don't pay a dealer or a private party any more than Carmax is asking for a similarly-equipped vehicle. Carmax is a little high IMO (not a lot, but a little), so I think that's a great benchmark for "top dollar" for any other dealer.

If the bank will give you $17,900 on that '02, I'd work the dealer a little bit and say "my bank won't go higher than $17,000" (assuming KBB/Edmunds say that's fair), and see what happens. $17,900 is probably a fair price, but hey, you've got to play the game!

Some dealers in the Chicago area are part of vehix.com and/or cars.com, so you can check several dealers' inventory at once that way. Most dealers also have used car inventory on their own Web site, so with a little bit of typing, you can find most of the used 4Runners in the area.

When you say "the bank well lend me $17,900" - is that the most they'll lend you? If so, you may really, really want to look for something a little cheaper. It is never a good financial decision to spend the most you can. None of my business, so feel free to tell me to take a hike. Something to think about.

a Dealer has a "Toyota Certified" 2005 SR5 V6 4x4 36000 miles. asking $24,400

KBB has it listed with a $23,860 "Suggested Retail value"

what would be a fair offer...



Anyone knows Dealer Invoice on a 07 SR5 V6 4X4

was thinking about, going to a dealer, just for the heck of it. and wanted to have idea what they cost and not hear HIS BULLS@*t!!!

invoice is about 26k then you start adding options. Invoice after options will generally come to 28.5-29k for a 07 sr5 v6 4x4. And these SUVs are not made without at least SOME options.
