He wouldn't move on it too much and didn't offer all that much on trade. . I walked away (after the long drive too!)

The only reasons I couldn't pull the trigger were that my wife was not with me and there seemed to be a lot surface rust underneath (like the frame). Rode and drive fantastic though! And the body itself was in perfect shape except for a little dent on the tailgate...

I just picked up an '03 limited v6 4x4 with 84k an awesome condition for just under $17k. You can find deals out there, just he persistent and diligent with your search.

In terms of getting the explored, forget about it. Unless you plan on getting the latest edition. It doesnt sound like you'll be doing a lot of offloading and the explored is fine for all the over stuff you mentioned. I was in the same boat as you though and have always just wanted a 4runner, so after briefly entertaining a few other options, I just knew the runner was the right choice.

In terms of reliability, toyotas can't be beat. Forget about all this recall crap, that scheisse happens to all vehicle manufacturers. And, the last forever. For example, my dad sold his Lexus sc400 for $4,500 to Carnax after it had four drivers and 240,00 on the clock.

And, just another update on my quest:

Went to look at an '06 v6 white 4x4 today. I gotta say, all the searches I've done on the v6 vs. v8 endless debates seemed to ring true.

- v6 was definitely quite fast and really got up and went when I wanted it to. Absolutely no power lacking what so ever. I'd venture to say its faster than my wifes '06 Pontiac G6 3.5L v6 sedan! Which is impressive of an SUV to say the least... (Definitely faster than my 4cl 5-spd Accord.)

- v6 has a little more noise from under the hood, but nothing bad - almost kinda a good noise

- v8 is nice and quiet and smooth except for the nice little rumble when you're getting on it out the exhaust.

- v8 seemed marginally faster if memory serves correct in the comparo.

Long story short, it has 49k miles, originally asking $23 (and they knew from the start they would never get that). They wanted to throw out a "really low price" if I committed today, but I told them no matter what, I'd need to think about it... So finally, i said "just give the the think about it price" and they came back with $19,998... I think i can get them all the way down to $18.5 on Monday if i really work at it...

But I might hold out hope for an 06 or newer v8 with low miles... I got a buddy who owns a used car lot that is on the lookout for me at auctions/etc...

If anyone out there thinks im crazy for not going for that one for like $19 (the price I'm absolutely sure I can get them down to), then let me know!

Also wanted to add that this place is literally like 4 miles from my house and I noticed only very minimal surface rust on the welds under (looked very good for a PA car). The v8 in Ohio was full of rust!

I'm not from the area so really can't comment on what it's worth, but sounds like you've got them down pretty good. If the truck is good and the price is right I'd say go for it!

Yeah... I'm beating my head into a wall on this decision! Below is the actual posting. The thing did drive great and the wife liked the way it drove/etc. Then, this thing looks like it's been listed since the fall judging by the leaves on the trees also. They know their price is waaaay inflated. I googled the VIN and found a "cached" version of the previous posting, where it was listed at $19,999 last year at another place. They couldn't sell it, so it moved onto this place on the dealer market I assume. It could just be a good puppy in need of a good home, but I'm leary! And I don't know how much I trust the guys selling it... When I'm buying a used car, it's like the person is selling me their trust with the car if that makes sense?

I have a buddy of mine who owns a used car lot that I put on the hunt for me. I just asked him to start looking last week. So part of me wants to see that through and see what he might find. He's looking in all the auctions/etc to try to find one for me...

I am still absolutely, 100% torn on the v6/v8 debate. They are both good motors! So I guess I'll just sit tight and see what my buddy comes back with. I gave him the instructions that I didn't care on the v6/v8, but he did sort-of recommend a v8.

Maybe you should hold out for your buddy and see if he finds anything good for you soon. If not, and you don't want to wait anymore, you've got this one to come back to, right? If you wanted to take it to a local shop and have it inspected, would the dealer let you? Have they given you a carfax to look at? Like you said, it could be a really nice truck, and they just had it priced too high, but ya never know. Good luck!!

V6 man!!! My wife drive ours 100 mile round trip to work 5 days a week and gets 22mpg all day!! No way in the world the V8 gets that. You wont regret a 4Runner Ive had three with no major problems. But :happens: sometimes and you might have to repair something but you wont have to twice. Good luck.imp:

Thank you both for the help! I did see the carfax on that one, which is one of the things I wasnt the biggest fan of personally...

I just talked to my buddy again today. He said he's gone to look at 3 different ones that he's located on the dealer market, but didn't get that "comfort level" with any of them. He's got some Yota dealerships that he deals with on a regular basis looking for him as well.

He also confirmed that he won't get one unless it's something he would drive himself. (I went to high school with this guy and he wouldn't lie to me).

So he said to just give it a week or two and he'll surely find one. I feel very confident now that within the month, I'll have a very good and well taken care of 4Runner!

Can't wait to join ya'll "officially".

Well, sadly no new updates. I think/hope that my patience will pay off in the end though. Gas prices are still high and the winter is pretty much over. I'm hoping people are heading to the dealerships to make new purchases (and trading in their Runners in the process!)

I'm not looking too much, but I have been checking out the AutoTrader at least every other day. Not much new posted...

My buddy hasn't located anything yet, but I'm planning on just being patient and allowing him to find me one. He's pretty confident and I gave him a $20k limit now.. lol

Trust me, the night that I find "the one" you all will be the first to know! I keep seeing them on the road and pretty much just stare when I do... I think Silver is now my "preferred" color actually.

My day will come.... Oh yes, my day will come... haha.

So my buddy found a black 2006 Sport v6 with 34k miles that he can purchase off the dealer market and sell to me for $22,500.

Oddly, I might wait... I think I'm set on a v8, its not my preferred color, and its more than I was planning to spend.

Anyone think I'm crazy? Because it sounds like a good deal to me.

D**m tough decisions... Wish I wasn't so particular I guess.

Sure does. (Around PA a 2wd truck just won't do in the winter..)

Diff lock and 4 low go right in too with no issues.

I am so pumped! lol. Its tough to fight the urge to just drive around all day... love the v8 power too.

It's gorgeous Stan!! Congrats on the new Runner, it looks like you found the perfect one, and it's soo pretty! Love the color, and the fact that it's a 4x4 v8, that is nice. I bet you have had a blast driving it around today, and bet ya can't wait for some snow to roll around in!
