New Member/T4R Owner in New Orleans

Hey Gang - I just bought my first 4Runner in August, a 98 SR5 2WD Auto. Loving it so far! It has inspired me to figure out how to work on my own vehicle, a personal first.

So far I've managed to change the rotors/pads, drums/shoes & front struts (bought the rear shocks but ran out of time w/ my mechanical mentor/brother before he moved to Houston...)

The vehicle has 240k on it and I'm not 100% sure of the previous owners service record... So I'm about to take it in to a trusted mechanic for service.

I'm getting together a laundry list of things for the mechanic to do when I take it in on Monday. So far my list is:

• Change timing belt/water pump (there are some other things they will do in this service besides just the belt & pump, can't remember them all right now)

• Change out all steering/control arm bushings (steering has about and inch of play, already got new tires/alignment, still has play, prob gonna grab the poly bushings from energy suspension)

• Drain/change transmission, brake & power steering fluid.

• Change the plugs/basic tune up

• Install the rear shocks I bought but don't have time to do...

I would love to hear any other service suggestions that you guys might have.

Welcome! Looks like you have a good list so far. I would throw a Battery in on that list also just to be safe if you have no idea how old it is. Looks like you are off and running though.

Welcome aboard. That's a pretty complete list. Maybe change the gear oil in your rear diff. Good job!:clap2:

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I'm def going to include a new battery & gear oil on my list.

One tiny thing that i can't seem to find a good explanation for on here or elsewhere...

When I bought the truck the chk engine light was on, noticed a few days ago that it's now off, only real engine work i've done so far is changing the oil, and the light must have gone off 3 or 4 days after I changed the oil.

Is it possible that the chk engine light was just for an oil change?

EDIT: Actually, I bought a power steering fluid cap (old one was missing...) and I'm thinking that's the reason for the chk engine light going off.
