New member with 3rd gen 4Runner

Hi, all.

I'd been searching for a couple of years now for a meaningful bulletin board for other 4Runner owners; just found this place on Google.

I own a '96 SR5 4WD, in addition to a '92 Talon TSi AWD and an '03 Mazda Protege5. The P5 is the daily driver, the 4Runner is the family hauler, and the Talon is the part time toy/full time jackstand warrior.

I'm about to hit the search feature pretty hard, as I'm replacing the timing belt and water pump on the 4Runner this weekend for the first time. Any advice or links you can give me here would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. I have heard a lot of good things about the P5...good handling and a nice shape in my opinion.:rolling:

As for your questions, here is a link to answer both:

Excellent write-up!! You will need a service manual and the special crank shaft pulley holding tool so you can remove the crank shaft pulley bolt and to retorque it.

While you're at it, consider replacing these:
1. Thermostat & Gasket
2. Cam Shaft Seals (X2)
3. Main Crank Seal
4. Radiator Hoses (upper/lower)
5. Accessory Belts - Alt, AC, Pwr Steering
6. Changing oil cooler hoses

Thai that is a good write up on replacing the belt. It looks to me the water pump is run by the timing belt, the same as my Acura and Honda. I remember someone at Edmunds saying the water pump was not run by the timing belt. Boy 217 ft/lbs of torque, that is a lot. I doubt my torque wrench goes that high.

Very well-built for what I paid, and handles unbelievably well. Just enough utility to it to be useful. Got it out the door with A/T transmission for $14,100 with 3 miles on the odometer.

I just wish it wasn't so bloody slow, you know? :)

Very nice. That's exactly the kind of thing I've been searching for. I was starting to get scared that I'd be the one to make a write-up on my first 5VZ-FE timing belt swap. You just saved me a lot of trouble. Thanks.

I bought the accessory belts because mine were cracking and worn. 80,000 miles on the truck.

Uh-oh. What are the horror stories? I bought a Bosch water pump and Dayco belts from Pep Boys. Figured they'd be good enough, as the 4Runner does Minivan Duty more than anything else.

Make sure that you have the Toyota special tool to hold the crankshaft pulley while retorquing the bolt. If the bolt isn't tightened to the required (very high) torque, it'll eventually back out. The resulting pulley wobble will damage the keyway slot in the nose of the crankshaft. This would be very bad.

I have just heard that since you're doing this every 60-80K miles, you should do it right the first time. I have no idea if the aftermarket stuff will be just as good.

I've called a couple of different places now and can't find anything fitting this description. Probably will need it. :)

Anyone have any ideas/part numbers, etc.? I'd be greatly appreciative.
 
I decided I'm going to make it instead. :) Anyone know the dimension between the centerpoints of the bolts needed to hold the crank pulley?

Nope. It's not the oldest. :) The search Tapatalk doesn't always show everything. So I can see how easy this happens. Besides people complain when users don't search then they complain when they start a new thread. Uses can't win. ;)

Are you just looking for the bar to hold the crank pulley? You can always DIY one with a long bar, hole saw, and a few bolts.
I made one similar to the pic and made it long enough to hit the ground or the frame depending on direction.
