Ok guys my name is Aaron. i have an 87 sr5 runner. love it. i replaced the head over this winter. i went to try to start it and it will try to fire, but then after a couple attempt it backfires threw the intake. it actually blows the intake off the filter box!!!!! I think its a timing issue. But i didn't change the position of the timing chain. Any ideas???? Im trying to avoid taking the head back off.

You might want to pull the valve cover off and verify that your timing gear marks are correct at top dead center. Once that is verified take off your distributor cap and make sure that it is pointing at the #1 spark plug terminal on your cap.
How did it blow your intake off? Are you talking about the rubber elbow at the throttle body or the connection at the filter box/AFM?

the intake tube blows off at the air filter box. yes i have checked all the timing things. is the motor at tdc. is the distributor pointing to #1 spark, yes. Im thinking that somehow the timing chain has jumped teeth. Now there is something that is weird about this timing chain. it only has one colored link on top, and one on the bottom. Now i know this isnt correct according to the hanes manual that im using. what should i do?

It will all depend on what after market company makes the timing chain. I my self have seen two, one with the colored links and the other marked by dots.
Have you checked you plug wires? The firing order is 1342, NOT 1432.

Distributor is 180* out.
ok, so i worked on it today. my valve lash was way too tight on intake and exhaust. IDK how that could have happened. :wtf: and the distributor was a tooth off. it will fire and run for a second but not stay running now. i think im having a fuel problem now. or its bad gas. it has been sitting since 07 with a full tank of fuel. so i think im going to drop the tank, and do a new fuel pump and filter while im there. the truck has 295,000 miles on it.
so i drained the tank today. 15 gallons of fuel down the tube!!! oh well it was old anyway. put some new fuel in it! it fired right away. it was great! it runs smooth and sounds even better, with its new headers and 40 series flow master muffler. it has a little water leak under the intake manifold, but other than that, it might be ready for a drive. now just onto the rest of the truck. back k door, driver side window motor, ect.... this might be turning into a build thread! im going to try to post some pics tomorrow. then everyone can tell me what they think.
