[vol4runner]

Hello everyone. I just found the site and joined. I've already read some informative stuff.

I don't currently own a 4runner, but am actively looking for one (most likely a 3rd gen). Is there any advice you guys could give me? What should I look for or stay away from? Thanks in advance.

Welcome aboard! You won't regret getting a 4Runner. This was my first ('05 4th gen), and I love it, but I have plenty of friends with 3rd gens, and they love them too. Like with any used vehicle, I would suggest checking the VIN history, compare asking price to KBB to make sure the price is reasonable, and look for the obvious wear and tear to the vehicle itself, and make sure it isn't a wreck waiting to happen.

There is a whole forum on this site devoted to 3rd gens, so if you haven't seen it yet, take a look.

Thanks. I'll be replacing my full-size Bronco with the 4Runner. I have several friends that have 4Runners and they love them. Hopefully I'll find one.

However, don't buy a 4Runner. It is the worst car I've ever owned. The VSC traction computer went out. Water pours in the top. It only gets 9-12 MPG, with only moderate acceleration. All 4 wheels came off.

All the above is true (except the "worst car" thing).

However . . .


Water only pours in the top if I leave the moon roof open.

It get's 9-12 MPG with moderate acceleration when I'm towing a 5,000 lb. trailer over the Rockies.

All 4 wheels came off - when I bought new Revo tires.

And the only really legit problem is that the 2003 did have a computer problem (which is being replaced under my extended warranty).

Actually, it is a truely amazing vehicle in so many respects. An awesome all-arounder, with that fameous Toyota quality feeling.
