I do not understand the lighting. When I switch to 4hi I get the flashing green and yellow signals. I do not know if I'm in 4WD or not. The steering is heavier is all I know.

4LO: is a flashing light with the beep.

Locked / unlocked: Cannot feel any change whatsoever w/ no indicator lights

VSC: SUCKS! got stuck in a pothole.

I've read the owners manual and still do not understand. When your done laughing please let me know what's going on.

Thanks,

You can drive in 2H or 4H unlocked all day long without harming the drivetrain.

The green light when solid, means you're in 4WD. The green and amber will flash as the transfer is trying to complete the cycle from 2H to 4H or vice versa. When the center diff is locked, you'll get the amber light as well. When in 4L, it'll be indicated by 4LO and the 4WD light on the instrument cluster.

The 4th gen V6 4WD can be in 2H, 4H unlocked, 4H locked, 4L unlocked and 4L locked. You can shift from 2H to 4H on the fly under 62mph and at speed from 4H to 2H. To shift from 4H to 4L and vice versa, you'll need come to a complete stop and be in neutral. You should not lock the center diff on dry pavement or a high traction surface. All four wheels rotate at the same speed when the center diff is locked, which would cause binding when making turns on a high traction surface.

If your green and yellow signals are flashing you didn't shift into 4 hi. You need to put it in neutral (anywhere under 62mph) and then shift the knob from 2wd to 4 hi. They should blink for a second or two and then stay solid. Sometimes if you're trying to do this when you're stopped it won't engage so try doing it at like 5mph (in neutral) your first time to see what's happening. If you do that and it never goes solid then you may have a problem with the 4wd actuator. That's big bucks to fix so if you just bought it find out quickly so the dealer can fix it.

No you dont, actually. I don't even have a V6 and know this. Neutral and a complete stop is required when shifting into 4lo.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've tried 100 different ways with no success. I hear an electrical motor turn on with a subtle beep after a second or two(do not know the source). Will try to find it today during lunch. No solid lights though, so no 4WD.

The vehicle was never driven off pavement by school teacher who worked 1 mile from home thus the low mileage. Probably never looked at the 4WD knob much less tried it out.

Will keep researching but any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Thanks everyone. I've tried 11teen times with no success. I do hear an electrical motor come on then begins to beep. I do not know the source as of yet. I will try at lunch to find it. Sound is coming from the underneath/middle of the vehicle.

The previous owner was a school teacher who only drove a mile to work thus the low miles(34K). She never left the pavement much less engaged the 4WD at any time.

Thanks,

Yeah sounds like your actuator might be bad. Not using the 4wd is worst thing you can do it. I don't know that much about this since I've got the v8 and thus full time 4hi but there are lots of threads where people have had this problem.

I just bought a 2008 that would not always shift into 4WD. The green light should blink and then stay solid.
Before I bought it, I took it to a dealer. The actuator was sticking. They lubed it and now it shifts into 4WD without any probelms. $42.00

When I was reading the manual and talking with the mechanic, if your 4WD light keeps flashing and doesn't go solid, you can try to roll forwards or backwards very slowly in Drive and it will kick in.

I wanted the darn thing to work as designed, so I had it checked.

Hopefully you can have it lubed and it will fix it.

Once you get it working, you'll want to run a few miles in 4WD about once per month to keep everything lubricated and spun.

I go through all the 4WD stuff once per month.

I put it in neutral, make sure it shifts into 4WD low and 4WD Hi. Then I actuate the differential locking mechanism.

Don't drive with the diff locked. Just drive it in 4WD Hi for a few miles once per month. Have all your zerk fittings greased each oil change.

Hope this helps, the manual is a little confusing I agree.

Best regards,
Doug
