New Mod - Fulltime 115V AC Power

Well I mentioned this in my introduction thread but it didnt get any response so I will start a specific topic on it.

I took the fulltime 12V mod a step further and modded the 115V inverter to be operable any time.

Already came in handy a few times. For example, your out for a day with your digicam and drained down the batteries. Go back to the rig, plug it in, hit the on switch, go back out have lunch etc., come back in an hour and your all set. No need to have the vehicle on or the keys in the ignition.

Fulltime 115V AC Power write up

Havent seen anyone do this yet...so any questions, let me know.

I love your mod write ups and I followed through with a few on my '99 but I've yet to do the full time power outlet and it would definetly come in handy for so many things.

Nice work on both Runners.

So,you are keeping the '99? How many miles have you racked up since it was new?

Thanks Ron, initially I thought I would sell the 99, but for now I'm keeping it. Bought it new and currently have 48k miles on it. It would be a shame to get rid of it as it runs/drives like new.

The fulltime 12v power mod on a 1999 takes literally 5 minutes, as the relay to pull and jumper is in the engine compartment, now get out there and do it ;): :biggrin2:

Yeah,I just refreshed my memory that it's as easy as the foglight mod.

48k? Man,it's not even broken in.

I have 131k on mine and all the windows roll up and down evenly, zero leaks from the drivetrain and burns only about a 1/4 of a quart of oil every 9k when the synthetic is changed. Even my power antenna still works fine.

Outside of normal maintenance all I've had fixed was the rear axle seals at 100k and new bushings for the roll bar and sterring rack just done recently.

Your site was one of the main factors in getting the Runner I did;I love the original Highlander model.

Other than the rear axle seals, I've never had any problems at all, just normal maintenance which i do myself. Unfortunately the seals seem to be a common problem with the 3rd gens but luckily my seals were done when the rig was under warranty.

Bump

Does anyone know if this mod bypasses the dash switch entirely? It is clear from the writeup that the vehicle does not need to be on for the outlet to work after the mod, but I'm looking for a way to keep the outlet on all the time without having to hit the toggle switch.

No it does not bypass the dash switch. It just allows the switch to remain active with the vehicle off. I am still using this mod all the time, love it. I don't recommend bypassing the switch to keep the inverter running all the time though.

Is there a way to get a 115V outlet (OEM Style) on a 4runner that was not equipped from the factory?

There is always a way. The consensus is that for this in particular, it is not worth it cost benefit wise. Factory inverter parts cost a fortune. Better off buying an aftermarket higher wattage unit and hardwiring it in.

Cool thats what I assumed, coming from Hondas/Acuras/Subarus, there were always dealerships selling kits for things that were in high demand, at great prices.
