New mod on the way!

I was pulling my ruined carpet out the other day. Underneath my driver's side rear seat I found an access cover. It goes to the fuel pump wiring harness. Right smack on top of the fuel pump assembly.

So now I have the idea to cut out this access hatch even bigger. Big enough to allow me to change out the fuel pump assembly without dropping the gas tank! I plan on fabricating a new cover with some sheet metal and screwing it to the floor with self tapping screws. If any of you have ever had the pleasure of changing a fuel pump in a tank that had half a tank of gas or more in it, you can appreciate this mod. The best part is this mod is hidden beneath the seat and carpet. Enjoy, fellow mechanics!

I've changed a few fuel pumps in my day...so yes I can appreciate the info you are dispensing! Hopefully I won't have to change anymore...but I think I said that before the last one as well!

I had a 1998 SS. Just cut a trap door and get some weather stripping and tap some screws. A trap door makes life easier and the carpet covers it up.

from restoring old vw's where you see every kind of hack that's humanly possible, i can say from experience, do every thing you can to prevent rust, when your cutting in the metal you expose bare edges to the elements and then it's only a matter of time till it starts eating away the whole floor pan, if you have already taken this into consideration the just ignore me, just wanted to be sure you thought about that as even just the condensation on the inside of the ride can start eating away at bare metal quickly. so prime it and seal it , and use the weather strip mentioned above as well.

other than that sounds like a nice mod for the home mechanic, i may just have to do this! thanks for looking outside the box and coming up with new stuff!

Yeah, same here....and every one I've changed was inside the tank!

Yeah you know you have changed a few when it takes 30-45 minutes to remove, repair, and replace the tank in vehicle. Did my friends S-10 Blazer 3 times. Twice in one day since the intial replacement was faulty. Also a few others. I will be taking a look at this mod myself.

Does anyone know if the filter on our fuel pumps is replaceable or is it one unit?

Every in tank pump I have ever replaced, with the exception on mid 90's and up Dodge trucks and Jeeps, has had a screen. I plan on keeping the original cover, and making the underlying cover from aircraft grade anodized aluminum. I went to the local Aviation Maintenance school for several years. I'm quite confident I can get a piece or cut one out of an old fuselage they have laying around. You can even get a good peice of roof flashing at Lowe's, etc.
