new muffler. whats your opinion?

ok so i have been looking around and found a few options. in my search i have found the flowmaster haters, the magnaflow haters and the cherrybomb haters... but i want your input!

im between
flowmaster
magnaflow
dynomax?
cherrybomb vortex

if i go flowmaster, 40 or 50 series?? which is louder or deeper or what?
magnaflow, should i go with the 18" or the 24" ?
is dynomax any good? i liked the sound clips but fill me in...
and cherrybomb vortex sounds pretty good online, but is it any good?

im just looking for some input, no matter what i choose, im probably going to eliminate all the tailpipe behind the muffler and just put on like a 90degree turn down pipe so as to eliminate all the tail pipe and make it look like it has none at all.

PS. PRICES on any and all of this would be awesome, thanks im a nooob.

not trying to hi jack your thread, but what are the advantages to a cold air intake versus the stock intake? (im assuming would be a hot air intake?)
 
Ive seen Doug Thorley headers, OBX racing headers, JBA headers and of course the TRD headers around. JBA Evol exhaust is around $300 and good quality, or have a shop make one and use the type of performance muffler they have in stock. Whatever fits nice in the stock location should work. Replacing the headers is a MUCH larger job and involves lifting the engine.

haha well i bought the car with this on it already but i hear it can add up to 10 hp and the K&N pretty much never has to get replaced, just cleaned properly every 4-6 months. i think it adds a little more sound quality too, but who knows?

The K&N like I have mostly just lifts the restriction on the airflow and lets the engine take in air at a faster rate. It has a small metal heat shield to try to keep engine heated air out but while sitting in traffic I am sure the air is not "colder" than it would be stock. While driving the air is probably the same temp as stock air, there is just more volume flowing through the engine which allows it to "breathe" better. This gives better throttle response and better gas mileage. Like you said 99-02's get 10 HP and 96-98's get 6.5 HP. The intakes as they are stock are pretty restrictive.
So 1) open up the intake, K&N or deckplate mod
2) install headers
3) high flow cat
4) performance exhaust
all done and free flowing
 
I have the Vortex and really like it. I don't notice a drone like others have reported with the Flowmaster 40.

Flowmaster 40 will be louder than Flowmaster 50.

The Vortex is about $40 cheaper than the Flowmaster and Magnaflow.

I think I remember seeing someone with a Dynomax, but they don't seem to be as popular.

I think I got my Vortex for about $50ish shiped. The shop charged me about $50 to install it too.
 
I called around to about 5-6 shops and they were all in the $45-$60 range I think. Since your in CA your prices might be different.
 
Search young one... Ther are a multitude of threads just like this one...

However, since I'm replying already, I have the 18" Magnaflow and have done the deckplate mod (po' boy's K&N) and also i have no catalyitc conv. <--that probably won't slide in Cali) and it sounds amazing... Not to loud at cruising speeds, but not unheard at WOT either, very throaty but not bumble bee-ish...

i bought the car with the K&N on it already, but i think they run about $200? give or take... and i think it is a DIY kinda job, cant be that hard to swap from stock.

thank you, yea my neighbor told me its not that hard, i think i may do a K&N with a vortex before a lift and tires.... does anyone have rectangle tips? i saw on a tundra in a parking lot one day, and they look pretty cool....
 
i havent seen rectangular tips and i think they look a little too... "pep boys aisle 3" for me, but different strokes for differnet folks.
and i would suggest the deckplate mod too. its all about unrestriceted airflow which the deckplate does do- for a whole lot cheaper.
