New Owner (2007 Sport) - Need Help!

Hi Guys -

I just got a 2007 Sport with 52K miles on the clock, and for the most part I love it. However, there is this REALLY annoying, and seemingly getting stronger, humming noise coming from the front axel - and which can be felt also in the steering wheel - whenever I take a left turn curve on the road, but only at highway speeds (beyond about 50 mph) and only to the left... I took it to the mechanics today with the idea that it probably was a wheel bearing, and most likely - as far as I understood from reading the archives in this forum - the one on the passenger side. The idea, however, was immediately dismissed by the mechanics on the basis of being way too soon for a wheelbearing to fail. Instead, they performed an alignment and tire rotation, which did not fix the problem at all...

I did not have a chance to see it from underneath while on the lift at the mechanics, but I have crawled under and do not see anything out of the ordinary, except for the steering tie rod ends (the last piece - with a female thread - that screws on the rod coming from the rack and pinion assembly - see a picture of the latter in the attachment)... The one on the driver's side is perfectly horizontal. That is, the perpendicular prone end (about 1 inch or so in length) points perfectly upwards, just like in the pic shown in the attachment. The one on the passenger side, on the other hand, is rotated about, I would say, 45 degrees (!). Is this normal? Why is it not positioned in perfect symmetry with the one on the other side? :wtf: Also, as a side note (and this is perhaps just my visual paranoia) the tie rod kind of looks not perfectly straight...

Has anybody had a similar problem with this sort of humming/vibration noise? After reading my description of the problem, does anybody have any comments or suggestions?

Thank you so much!

Is there any evidence of an accident or damage? Clean CarFax? Are the tires worn at all unusually? This could be an alignment issue, and your observations might be important clues. Take it to a frame and alignment shop, preferrably one with a frame machine where they can take measurements of your frame using a precision frame machine. Although it sounds like any alignment shop may be able to verify your alignment.

Where are you located? If anyone is local, they may be able to help you find a good shop.

I wouldn't rule out the wheel bearing.I had one replaced at 59k.It would hum when driving, but would get louder when I turned left and go away when I turned right. The local Toyota dealer wanted $870.I found a reputable garage who did it for less than half of what they wanted. No more hum/growling noise.

I had the same type of problem on my 07' which only had 34k miles at the time.

Diagnosis: Replacement HUB & BEARING needed.

(1) RING, O - replaced
(1) BEARING ASSY, FR - replaced
(1) SEAL, TYPE V OIL - replaced
(1) HUB SUB-ASSY, FR - replaced
(1) NUT, FLANGE - replaced
(1) CAP, FR WHEEL - adj

Problem solved.

Wheel Balance...

Did they balance the tires?

No. They did not. Even though there was a tire rotation done, and one would expect that the vibration would have changed positions/behavior if it were due to incorrect balancing, your suggestion is definitely in my list of things to do next, just in case... Thanks, Ray.

Located in (not so) sunny Austin, TX...

Hi Scott - Thanks for the reply. I am located in Austin, TX. And yes, I would greatly appreciate somebody pointing me to a good shop that specializes in precision frame alignments.

I never got to see the Carfax even though the dealer (reputable Nissan dealer in Houston) said they had it. Maybe a mistake on my part, but I just assumed things had to be right, otherwise they would not even mention the car history at all. They even offered a bumper-to-bumper warranty (3y/36K for about $1800) on the truck, which I declined at the time... Hmmm, I am thinking maybe I am still in time to take the offer if it covers all those issues.

Hi Dave -

Your comment bears high relevance, particularly if it happened to you at 59K. Definitely, the wheel bearing possibility cannot be ruled out. One of the local shops quoted me about $420 for one side only. Was your quote at the dealer for both sides?

Thank you.

Hi BassMiesterNJ -

Wow. Right on! Was there anything unusual that made the bearing fail in your opinion? Were both sides done? What was the charge for the job, if you do not mind my asking? (just to have a basis of comparison...)

Thank you!

Thank you!

Nothing unusual causing the fail.

One side.

No charge - under warranty.

Note: could yours be covered under 5yr/60k Drivetrain warranty ?

$870 for 1 side. This is the only complaint I have about Toyota, their service sucks.I had stereo problems at 34k,they made a note of it in the service records, which I have a copy of,when the stereo acted up again out of warranty ,they told me I was SOL!

I ask because of the lug centric adapters that need to be used on the factory alloys......make sure who ever does it, you ask them about it. If you search "lug centric" here, yotatech, google, or any other Toyota forum.....you will find a lot to read.

lug-centric? I haven't had my wheels off yet, but I expect them to be hub-centric, you're saying 4th-gen wheels are lug-centric?

Don't have any info on when it started but I think all 3rd and 4th Gen alloys are lug centric. If it has the shank lugnuts like the ones on the left, they are lug centric.

I don't know of any cars or trucks that come lug-centric, they've been hub-centric for decades now. Some aftermarket wheels may be lug-centric, many come with adapter rings to center them on the raised ring on the vehicle hub. Lug-centric wheels would need tapered lugs like the ones on the right to help center them. Tire shops don't even balance wheels on the lugs anymore, it takes a special machine and/or adapter.

If El Rorro has aftermarket rims, perhaps they need adapter rings to get them centered before tightening the lugs. I used plastic adapter rings on my BMW with aftermarket rims, they worked well. My son thinks he's going to put Pontiac wheels on his Subaru, I'm waiting to see how they'll center.

It should be easy enough to see if your hub has a raised, circular, machined lip that matches the machined center of your wheel. If the lugs center the wheel, it would be easier to do with tapered lugnuts. It could be done with straight-bore lugnuts with flat washers, but everything would have to be very precision to keep things from binding on assembly.

Does anyone have steel wheels, or a steel spare? I'm curious if they come with different lugnuts, I think they did on the Land Cruiser.

I have a steel wheel spare, but if it came with different lugnuts.....I don't have them.

Does the 4th Gen have the shank lugnuts?

Maybe the 4th Gen was changed to be both lug and hub centric, but the 3rd gen runners hub doesn't match the OEM wheels exactly.

Another good read, found posted on Toyota120.
3.32 - What is the difference between "hub centric" and "bolt or lug centric" rims ? (All)

Apparently the answer is maybe.... :bigok:

Apparently I'm arguing the wrong side......Icculus and Scott you gents are correct, with the definition of hub centric and lug centric.

I'm definitely going measure to measure the hub and the wheel next time a tire's off.

I guess they are both required for centering......that's why the lugnut stud adapter is needed to get the best balance out of the tire?
I dunno anymore, I'm going to hump air.
