New Owner - Certified Used Expectation

Hello All,

I'm a new owner of a 2006 4runner Sport Ed V8.
Bought is certified used at a dealer.
Very happy with it, but now that I've had a chance to drive it ,
I'm starting to notice things that I would expect/or hope not of
had to worry about.

I noticed that at least two of the tires have a plug repair job.
And another tire loses about 5psi every week.
Is this acceptable for a certified used T4R?
Should they be responsible for fixing it or am I SOL?

Does the dealer have to give you vehicle inspection report?

Now that we have that out of the way They should have a report. They should replace the tire(s) or properly patch them from the inside. Plugged tires, these days, are considered a liability and they should take of you.

Welcome aboard! Go back to the dealer and demand new tires. They should replace them with new ones since you bought it certified and not "as is". And second, it's a safety hazard. They may not be the ones you want, but new.

So it says inspect tires for defects? What the H*LL does this mean? If the tire had a hole and they are plugged (instead of correctly patched) is this a defect? If the tires are good and they are a name brand (Bridgestone, Goodyear, etc.,) I would at a minimum demand that they be inspected to see if there is a patch inside. While they are at it, have them re-balance all tires including the spare. Speaking of the spare-have you checked it out?

If you demand new tires-they are going to go out and buy the cheapest Chinese tires they can find. I see this all the time on EVERYBODY"S certified vehicles.

So it's up to you.

Years ago I knew a mechanic that would plug and patch a hole in a tire. Although it would have taken a few extra minutes to do it, it's possible that the is patched on the inside despite the fact that you see a plug.

Since it's certified, you should do whatever you need to in order to be satisfied with the purchase. cknsls is right, though - if you make them replace the tires, they might put really crappy ones on there. You might be better off negotiating a deal like 1/2 off a new set or something like that.

I would never accept a plugged or patched tire on any vehicle purchase ESPECIALLY on a certified one. I would contact Toyota USA customer service and express your dissatisfaction to them first. They will get in touch with the dealer amd probably make them bring the vehicle up to standards.

I can see your point. But I don't think a tire that had a hole in it and fixed properly is necessarily a defect. If the hole is not too big and is plugged and patched it is perfectly safe and wouldn't bother me to transport my family in it.

A substandard tire on a certified vehicle is simply

RIDICULOUS

Bet the Area Ninja for Toyota would love to hear about it and I bet further that they would have four new tires on that puppy. Squeaky wheel..........ya know?
