New owner, few quick questions

Hi there, I've just recently purchased a 1999 4runner and I'm super excited about it. Its my first SUV, I needed it because I bought a bass boat last summer and my two other cars are a 93 Civic that can't drive over a curb, and an 03 Impreza for my "winter beater".

So, I found a runner at a somewhat local dealership that was an "as is" special. $4000 (canadian) with 240km, and it seems to only need a front window and a rear hatch for saftey. Does anyone on here know where I might go about finding some parts for it in southern Ontario? Junk yards are telling me its around $1000+ for a hatch for this thing! Also, its a 5 speed, I'm hoping it will tow my boat fine, I think the boat is only around 2000lbs-ish.

I'm wondering if the SR5s have heated side mirrors?

Also, do 99s come with a remote to unlock the doors? Mine didn't, but I'm not certain that it was an option.

Oh, and just a little note: My spark plug wires still say "1998" on them! I think I'll probably replace those.

Yes a factory alarm with remote and keyless entry was an option.

A 99 SR5 should have heated mirrors, are yours painted to match the body color or are they flat black like on base models. Usually if they are body colored they are heated, they're tied into the rear defrost so turn it on and see if they get warm. It should also have keyless entry, you can buy the clicker and program it yourself just make sure you get the correct one, you need to check the FCC ID on the back of the clicker, IIRC its HJ12Y but I will check when I get home as I have a few spares.

Are you looking to replace the whole hatch or just some part of it. $1,000 for the complete lift hatch w/ power window doesn't seem too out of line to me, expensive yes, but thats a big part. As for the window I would just get an OEM replacement.

The 5 speed is great for towing, no worries about your auto overheating, just don't burn up the clutch. You might want to put a good synthetic in there such as Redline MT-90 or Mobil 1.

If you have the six speaker stereo then you should have keyless entry, weird I know, but thats one item from the 'extra value packages' that will indicate if you have it. Ebay is a good source for a remote. All SR5's have heated mirrors.

Thanks, you guys are awesome! I'm so glad I can get a key fob for the locks, having to go up and use the key is so old school. (I get enough of that from the Civic)

And yes, the mirrors are painted to match so hopefully they're heated. We have some coooold winters.

Is it common for guys towing with a 5 speed to use tranny cooler, or is that more of just an auto thing?

The glass seems to be fine on the hatch, its just rotted all around the window seal. Maybe I'll just patch it up for now until I can get a deal on one. I did a search on here in the classifieds for the word "hatch" and "trunk" and got no usefull results.

I want to be with it. I'm going to read that link right now.

No need for a tranny cooler on a manual, yes its an auto thing. As I said earlier, a high quality synthetic will be your 5 speeds friend. If it were me I would go with Redline MT-90. When I had my 00 5 speed I tried the stock fluid, Mobil1, Redline MTL and MT-90. MT-90 produced the smoothest shifts, especially on those bitter cold mornings, and when its -3 here in MA it is probably -30 where you are.
