New Owner Headlights turning off randomly problem

Well like the title says, while driving my headlights will go off. The hi beam indicator then turns on. The hi beams will still work but the low beams stay off for a while. Sometimes I can turn the lights off then back on and they will work normal...sometimes they don't. Has anyone had this problem? How did you fix it? Any other suggestions on where to start? I feel like I am looking for a short somewhere. Where to start?

Also, my foglights do not work. They are the rectangular Hella foglights the bulbs look fine.

I had this problem as well when I got my '97 4 runner. You need to replace the turn signal/high beam switch in the column. Takes about 15 minutes. I bought the part from Advance Auto.


My foglights are tied into the high beams. When the high beams are on, the foglights turn off. This switch above may fix that issue for you as well.
