Hey all! Buying my first 4runner, I'm a wrangler convert! owned plenty of jeeps over the years, grew up in a used car dealership family and saw the reliability of 4runners, decided that this time it's getting a fair shake!

Buying a 2001 SR5 159K miles, looks good, runs good, of course checked on the timing belt and h20 pump, they were changed w/in the past year! I'm also getting two new tires w/ it! I can't wait to pick it up tomorrow! wish me luck!

Aloha brother! Too funny, i just signed up here so i could get advice on gearing up my 97 limited for a move to Hawaii! Ive had it for 8 years and she tells me she has 215 k on her, but I know she's lying. The odometer stopped and started a few times to deny her real age... sheesh, girls...

anyhow I'd love some advice on getting my truck salt and sand worthy and was looking for advice on someone / or a shop to go over it that's located in the SF Bay Area. Not to hijack your thread my friend, but looks like you you were just sharing your stoke and maybe the community suggestions will help both of us to know what to focus on?

one issue with my truck is that when the 4x4 is engaged its got a popping sound if I'm rolling slow out of a sharp turn..... would love some suggestion on super duper brakes since i burn through them... thanks!!!

I found that regular washing is the key (I hose mine down maybe once or twice in a two week period, including undercarriage) with my $100 pressure washer from Lowe's hardware. I have an 03 (4th gen obviously) with almost no rust anywhere except the liftgate (tiny pea sized spot) that was washed weekly, but my 3rd gen needs control arms, sway bar, struts, and is a lost cause as the frame has two cancerous spots on it that are gradually getting worse. I keep washing it to stop the rust as best as I can, but it's "dying".

Anyway, welcome to the "club". Not like Toyotas are in short supply over here though... ...just good priced ones. There's one in Pearl City (01) that the guy wants something like $12,500 for it, I hope that's not the one you're buying. It's white, unsure of mileage.

Thanks for the welcome, nope wouldn't pay that much, I'm picking the 4runner up today, I'll be sure to include pics and sure I'll share the price paid after I have possession.

After looking at it this weekend, I saw no rust, just a few dings, dents and scratches that are typical for a 13 year old vehicle, but over all nice truck. I settled for a 2wd as well, maybe there are still some good spots I can go check out with it.

Thanks, so far I couldn't be happier with it, so many vehicles I called about on Craigslist out here were already sold or outside of my budget, I got lucky with this one, hey it's got 159K miles, but for a 4runner that just means broken in! The owner had to bring the license plates up to date and get an updated safety inspection, which meant the front window tint is gone (it was too dark), but he put two brand new tires on it! (I say fair trade off!) so I've got registration and inspection good until next year! I'm stoked, now to just get out and drive it!
