New owner...what problems do I look for???

Hi! I just bought a 1992 sr5 V6 4X4. This is my first TR4 and I am wondering if there is anything I should look for immediately that could cause a major headache later. 'Blue' seems to run great, the only issue I have encountered so far is that it seems to be slowly leaking power steering fluid. Other than that no problems as of yet.
Any feedback would be great!!!

easy enough :) My next question is how difficult is it to install a 2" lift for a first-timer? I have all the tools...just need some advice as to what type of lift and if this is something I can do or should I fork over the $ and have someone else do it?
 
I would prefer a suspension lift. I eventually plan to use the ground clearance so I don't know that a body lift would do much for me. But at the same time it depends on the difficulty between the two, for now I just want to add a little clearance for tires.
 
Body lift is ok if you just want to clear tires. A suspension lift will add articulation and also let you run larger tires.

I wouldn't be taking on a project like you're asking about if you need to know the difference between suspension and body lifts. I'd poke around forums, search archived threads, and hook up with local clubs before diving into mods that may be over your head. Get to know your baby first, she might surprise you what she can do stock. ;)
 
I fully understand the difference between body and suspension lifts...I had a jeep in the past that I lifted myself, my question is more along the lines of how difficult is it on a TR4. I have been around jeeps my whole life so it wasn't too difficult to figure it out...but this is my first Toyota. I mainly want to know specifically on a 2nd gen 4runner, how difficult is the suspension lift install vs the body lift install...and any recommendations on certain brands or setups for this particular model?
 
Welcome to the board.
For the lift, you have to decide what you will really use the truck for and what size tire you want.
On the ps, try some of that Lucas stop leak. It worked in my 89 for awhile.

Ah, sorry, I must have misread.

My advice stands, tho - drive it stock first, and you'll have a much better idea of what mods you need for what you want to do. ;)
 
quick note about the power steering, when you top it up make sure you use ATF not power steering fluid. Sounds strange but it you look closely at the cap it says to use ATF. using power steering fluid makes the leak worse as i found out on my truck, ended up replacing PS pump and steering box b/c all the seals were shot.
 
Most of the body lift kits I've come across so far are for manual trans only. The ads didn't say why though. So a suspension lift might be your only option anyway. Then again I didn't look at every kit out there.

I noticed that too...oh well. Does anyone know of a somewhat easy fix for the rear end sag? I talked to 4wheel parts and they suggested a coil spacer in the rear. Is this the best option or are there better/alternative fixes?

As far as the lift I think I'm going to just take KidVermicious' advice and drive it stock for a while...but the rear end sag might put my OCD into overdrive :)

I hope I dont get crucified for saying this, but if you dont want to spend any money,,,, sigh, you can lower the front end with a turn of your torsion bar loading bolts.... Im gonna be sick....
 
If you are in Austin, I would stay away from 4 wheel parts. They are great if you know what you need, but depending on who you talk to you, they might not know jack about your truck.
I recommend LandCruiser Specialist on Burnet Road, 420-0012, or Krawltex, if you live up North, 996-9669.

That's crazy that you say that...I just found out the owner of Krawltex is a really good friend-of-a-friend! I plan on going over there in the next week or two and talking to them about a lift :)
