New Owner with Questions/Clarifications

Hello all, I just took possesion of a new 2010 limited, silver with no nav. Thanks to this forum I was able to search and gleam alot of information. I do have a couple of points that need clarification.

The first is the tires size. I plan on running Nokia Hakkas for a winter tire and I want to get a seperate set of rims for them. I would like to get 17's as there is a much better tire choice. On here I see that lots of people have 17's both aftermarket and it looks like some are using the FJ 17's. I asked a service writer about this through my salesman and was told the limited couldn't fit 17's and may not fit 18's. Now that I have the truck it looks like there is plenty of room around the calipers and 17's should fit. Who is right, the internetz or the service department?

Second questions is rock sliders. Since I need something to help the wife climb in and also for kayaks on the roof I am getting sliders. It looks like the main choices are Shrockworks and Rocky Road. Any other options? I am partial to Shrock because I am familar but the price and time saving of the RR might sway me in that direction. I won't be wheeling much, certainly not with the stock tires, they look like they will slip on wet grass!

I am loving this ride. It's a nice step up from the 2000 Xterra that I have had for the past 11 years.

If you really just need them for getting in and out of the vehicle and loading the roof rack, you might be better served with running boards. I have the ones from SE Toyota and the wife and 5 year old love them and they make accessing the roof easy for me.

I agree with above, if you dont really need sliders, running boards are definitely cheaper!

But if you like the look, go for it and get the sliders. I put skateboard grip tape on mine where you stand for traction, works great!

As for wheels, 17's will fit.

Thanks, I do like the look of the sliders better. I plan on keeping it for a long time and will mod over time. I am coming from an Xterra (yes with the rails that Shrockworks uses as a bad example of sliders) and always meant to put Shrock sliders on it but never got around to it. Now that I need to do something right off the bat, I think I am going to go the slider route. Plus I will get to remove the rocker panel trim that I don't like. The limited was bought primarily for interior comforts and the full time 4 wheel drive. It makes it easier for the wife to drive when I can pry her hands off the BMW.

I am glad about the 17's. Now to find a rim I like. I will have to explore the costs of aftermarket vs. the FJ's. I do like the FJ rims although some of the black rims I have seen on here are pretty nice.
