new owner

greetings fellow t4R owners!

I am a new user and the new owner of a 1988 T4R
SR5 V6 5spd hardtop stock everything. picked it up for $300 here in BC it has the typical rusty bc body but the frame is solid and so is the drivetrain but the other day I noticed when doing a full turn to the right, a u turn but at a slow speed like entering a lineup at a drive thru I hear a loud almost sounds like metal on concrete and I feel resistance, to me it feels like the tires rub. the tires are 31x10.5x15 any ideas what else it could be? bearings maybe? I also noticed when i take it out on the highway and Im doing like 110-130 kmph theres i bit of a wobble nothing too harsh is it the tires they are 31" M+S and arent really designed for highway driving? sorry about the noob questions but its my first 4x4 figured Id start with the best...so far I love it just like every other toyota i own...

Sounds like a CV axle maybe broke...If you here a crunch pop sound on a turn then a CV axle is most likely your issue.

Find yourself a parking lot or other large area and while driving slowly..turn your wheel until you start to hear the noise. Keep the wheel cranked over and stop, get out and look at whatever wheel is turned inside towards the frame. What you will more than likely see is a bolt on the inside of your wheel contacting a plate on your frame. If you see that then it is what is making your noise, it's the Toyota IFS groan, totally normal. That is there so you can't turn your tire into the frame. You can get these plastic bolt covers called groan stoppers if it annoys you enough, they won't take it totally away but it is not nearly as loud.

If that is not what is causing your problem then take a look at your CV boots, any tears in the boots are a good sign that your CV's are on the way out.

unbalanced tires would cause a wobble on the highway, probably just some uneven tread wear.
where in bc are you from?

The noise is probably the steering stops, the plastic caps from the factory are probably gone.
The vibes could be tires out of balance, worn TRE's, bushings, ball joints, etc.

its totally the bolt groaning...makes sense now that i think of it considering the size of the tires...as for the wobble I will have to check tire pressure I havent yet. oh and i live in surrey...not much 4x4ing but I think theres some wheelin out in cloverdale area.

You can get the groan stoppers from partsgeek for about 0.89, didn't bother to shop around after i found some.

I might point out that this is common in 99% of 1st gens and isn't really a big deal unless you're really bothered by the noise.
