New Paint/Wrap?

Who here has dealt with getting a new paint job or even a wrap? I have not had any damage to the car besides minor scratches and normal wear and tear, but just curious about the cost and process.

Also interested in professionally wrapping a car. Anyone have experience and can give me some prices?

Bonus points in CA or even Bay area

I had mine repainted. I’m in the Bay Area as well. If you want even a half way decent pain job though you are talkin 3 grand or so probably.

There are literally no limits to what you can spend on a paint job.

You can get a basic $2500-ish job that looks OK from 5ft.

Or you can get a $8,000+ job that will knock your socks off with all glass removed, jambs painted with the same quality as the exterior, new weatherstripping in the jambs, under the hood, many coats of clear coat, etc


A wrap is a decent option, but I'd be leery of anyone who says they'd wrap your entire 4runner for less than $3k. At that point you're awfully close to getting in the neighborhood of decent paint jobs

A high quality paint job will be $8-10k. If there's rust expect to pay more since pieces will break when they take apart the truck.

In order for a wrap to work and lay correctly the surface has to be perfect. A full wrap in my area will start at around $5k and doesnt include prep. It will be cheaper than painting but if the prep work isnt there your just wasting money.

Im in final stages of a full repaint, not for faint of heart.

I've been inquiring about painting my truck too because of some scratches and clear coat fading, and ya I think where I am a good paint job with the "friend-of-a-friend" discount was in the ballpark of $5-6k. I've thought about just doing the roof and hood, but I think that would be too obvious.

I've know that wrapping can be a good option, but still expensive. I like that you can "touch-up" yourself if you want and have some of the extra vinyl. We have a camper van that we bought and the previous owner had it wrapped. Only van on the road in that color.

I thought of doing it myself and started learning about the different types of wrap material, they vary in both price and quality... which only had me asking even more questions when talking to vendors.

It's good to brush up a little on the options out there before you get taken for a ride.

Quality of labor / skill can vary the results greatly as well.

I've toyed around with the idea of a full repaint for mine. The hood and roof clear coat is peeling, the bezels around the door handles are peeling at the tops, and there is a couple small dents and light scratches. I don't mind paying for a quality paint job, but as soon as I get the first scratch I would probably ugly cry like the "leave britney alone" guy/thing. I didn't buy my 4Runner to live on the blacktop so that's just not an option for me. Eventually I will raptor line it with the tintable liner to match my OEM color.

Yea the biggest thing if I was to go for it would be to find a reputable source. Friend of a friend who is a pro kind of thing.

Raptor liner is intriguing as well. Does it add any considerable weight to the car?

Less than a passenger or aftermarket bumper. Not sure how much each liter weighs but most of the references I've read recommend 8-10 liters for our vehicles.

I know rhino liner will add around 100+lbs for the entire rig, truck beds coated alone are around 30lbs
