New Rear Bumper

I have started to fab something up for the rear. So far I have just cut everything that needs to be cut. The main channel of the bumper as well as the drivers side is about 1/2 done. Still need to weld on passenger side wing and finish all the detail work. I will keep you updated on my progress. I hope to have a lot more welding done by the end of the weekend. Here are some pics with everything cut off. Bumper will sit just below all the plastic

This is kind of trial and error, so I am not promising anything, it could very well look like s*@#$ by the time I am done.

I like! I am around tomorrow if you need another hand or ideas tossed around. I think you should reattach the trailer hitch too (if you weren't planning on adding it back)...

Make sure you leave a slight gap between the the bumper and the plastic. A lot more likely with the rear that you will hit it against something that will cause it to move.

Nice cut, it looks clean so far... I was wondering how the bumper could be cut and still look clean and now I know. Looking forward to your creativity because I sure as heck have to pay someone to do it!

I will put some up later today. I have the main part of the bumper complete. Now I am working on intregrating the hitch, final details on the mounting, the side mounting plates, and a couple of trim pieces on the body.

Promise though I get some up later with my progress!

Sounds splendid. Now that you have gotten your hands dirty, How do you feel about the possibility of a rear tire carrier? Of course anything can be done, but with your design specifically. I just notice on the shot from the side the rear hitch bubbles out a good bit, so the arm would have to be set back a good amount, farther back than say the stock bumper. I am excited to see how you fit it all together, and how you tie in the sides to the frame/main point. I remember building the rear bumper/tire carrier on my 3rd gen when it was like the 2nd or 3rd ever to be done on a 3rd gen. Looking at your trim bits This looks like it is going to be a lot more complicated.

Anyways, I made a quick picture of some ideas I used when I built the bumper on my 3rd gen. I know the drawings suck but I did this during lunch on my laptop.

Lets start with the picture I drew on your truck. The black box is the main bumper channel which is not a problem or in question in this build .

Yellow= Random reservoir or whatever that is in the way of the frame rail on both sides.

The red is the bumper wing. The two small boxes on the bottom are supports that will extended to the frame rails.

Now to the picture on the bottom right. This is looking from the back of the vehicle. The red is the wing on the side. The yellow is still that thing blocking the frame rail. The black is the frame rail. I am hoping there is enough room underneath that they could just weld onto a bracket similar to the brackets used on bolt on sliders. If their is not enough room consider a bracket that looks like a backwards four, if that makes sense. It would have one part of the bracket that would hang below the frame rail that the support could be welded too.

Now for the picture on the bottom left. This is a view from above looking down on that corner. The black is frame rail, and again the yellow is that thing in the way. The red is the bumper and the bumper wing. The orange is an idea for another brace that could be welded to triangulate that corner and add a significant amount of strength for the wing.

I know exactly what you are saying and I cant figure out WTF that thing is either. Yes its in the way, but there is enough space to fab something for a support. I am supporting the main channel on the back with the four bolts that hold the hitch on. I did not remove the rear crossmember. Thought a lot about it and decided to keep in place.

So there is a 4x2 tube that runs the length of the rear, bolted onto rear xmember with the 4 bolts. I also have a support that bolts onto frame rail (where current tow hook is) that runs to the side of bumper (wing). The bumper wings are currently 2x2. I am still trying to figure out what is best for the area that you have described. I am probably going to tie into brace by tow hook (if that makes sense). Run a diagonal piece from that bracket to the end of bumper wing. Not sure if this will be strong enough, still thinking about best option.
