New Roof Rack

Got this prototype done today. It is just in primer form until I know there is nothing that I want/needs to be changed. I put a Yakima deflector on since it was laying around the garage, I think it looks pretty bad, too small, so I am going to have to fab something a little more substantial up.

It is actually really quiet with the deflector on, a little buzz at about 70 mph, but quiet until then. It may help with new deflector, we shall see.

I am running 33's and my vehicle now sits at 79 1/4 inches. I built it to ensure I could still get into my garage and gave myself a little wiggle room in case I ever go bigger on the tires.

It is made of 1 3/4 round, and is bolted to roof using factory bolts. The rack is stout, should have no problem holding whatever I want to put up there and I think only weighs about 150 lbs.

Looks sweet! I think what would top it off is if you put a metal grate on the bottom so you can load items on top and strap them in place.

Have you tried putting yakima/thule bars on top using the roof rail attachments?

A bit overkill on the tube dia., though it looks proportional and certainly is stout. weight is the issue. alum. tube instead?
Fairing def. has to go- maybe just a deflector on the rack itself, just have to see what cuts the noise best.
As mentioned above- some perf. plate as a floor and maybe some tiedown tabs or gussets to hook off along the sides

Looks good. Once you replace the deflector with something that fits it'll look better. you might be getting the whistle more from the space at the bottom of the reflector than the actual rack.

As mentioned above, welding steel grating to the floor will expand what you can throw up there and not be limited to the cross bars

Excellent work! Very rugged looking.

Spoiler is too small, it is not proportionate to the front end of the rack.

Agree that tube dia. is a touch large, it dominates the look of the truck.

Also agree that a 'floor' is a very practical idea, as well a cargo loops.

Thanks for all the input. Dont you worry a floor is going in, just finished it and wanted to make sure their was nothing major that needed to be changed before welding some perf. plate on the bottom.

I agree with all of you, the size is a little big. My main source of metal here had it in stock and it matched the tube on my sliders so I thought I would just go ahead and see what happened. 1" or 1 1/4" would look a little more streamlined. I just used 10 guage to keep the weight down.

No computer, not really any drawings, just pull the truck into the shop and start measuring and welding. If you dont like what you just did you just do it again and make changes.

Welding 1 1/8" bars on top for yakima attachments. I am a yakima guy

10 guage steel tube. Rack floor to follow. Room for PIAA 510's the small 4" ones. Pm me and I will give you specs on everything. Lots of welding, but you can make one no prob. just time.

No sliders yet....working on the new trailer build...like a friggin dog!

Actually used some of the pcs. I had bent for the sliders on the trailer....:lookout:
