Ok, I finally got rid of the BFG KOs after 57k miles. They still had lots of rubber on them but they definitely suffered traction loss in the wet roads. Driving over shallow puddles at 35-40 mph would cause the tire to pull and squirm, not good. If I were going into spring nad summer, I would keep driving and wear it some more. However, being in the foothills in the Sierras where we are already getting wet weather, the BFG's lack of wet traction hjad to be addressed.
So I went to 5 stores in one day looking for either the Revos (only available in either P or E load). Yokos, Goodyear SA in C, or Cooper Disc ATR. Every place were either out or would order or only had 2 left. I finally went to my old standby America's Tire where they had 4 Revos ready to go. So while I really preferred the C/LT load, could I live with a P load? What the heck, who am I foolin'? I went off roading twice in the 3 years I had the 4Runner and they were on dirt roads. I drive 99.999776547% on surface streets. I need snow and rain traction more than off road use. So I went with the Revos and here's what an old BFG fan sees the Revos.
We have had several days of light and moderarte rain so I monitored the Revos for wet slick surfaces. I drive very carefully so I did not venture to see the limits of the Revos, but I definitely can feel better grip around the wet surfaces--the most dangerous time as the water mixes with the grease and grime. I hit several light puddles and felt no pulling or squirming or the loud "whoosh" as would happen with the BFG in the latter stages of tread life. The Revos cleared water like Moses parting the Red Sea. The open channels and large voids did not allow any water to lift the tires. The extra siping worked and di its job in the most transparent way--you don't even notice it.
During the dry days, the Revos being new removed the medium roar and rumble when I pulled down to a stop. The BFG were starting to get noisy. Revos went over most road imperfections with less noise and thumping--totally expected for a new tire, a tire with softer compounds, a tire with 2 plies instead of 3 as used in the BFGs, and a compared to a P tire instead of a LT/C tire.
So.....would I buy BFG again? Yes, they last forever, great in the boondocks, can take all manner of punishment. Downside is the degradating level of traction in wet or slush as the treat wears down, the lack of channesl to flush water out becomes much more acute and noticable as the treat wears and provies less and less opporutnity for slush to blow out. The interlocking treads just work too well to interlock the water.
But would I prefer the Revo over teh BFG? For what I drive, and have to be honest that I will not be doing any real off roading in any near future, then the Revos is much more preferred. It provides more of what I need and not what I fantasize about behind my office desk.
