New some opinions

Hey guys,

So I currently have a 2WD Limited T4R that I have done alot of work on. It only has 105,000 miles and I bought it with 58k miles. I am extremely happy with the capabilities of this rig even with only 2wd. So my plan is to get a locker for the rear. However, I have had the problem of not having low gearing before so I wanted to ask you all what it would take to add the transfercase. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

check out ChildrenOfBodoms (COB's) Build thread. Nothing to it lol! Its pretty intensive, need a donor truck etc. Might be simpler to buy a 4wd and transfer your mods.

Just to clarify I don't want to do a 4wd conversion. I have since decided against that. I just want the transfercase so I have low crawler gears.

I think adding a T-Case won't be that hard. Just have to find a donor 4wheel trans and manual transfercase to swap the whole thing in. I would also mention that lower gears wont help much without a rear locker. Also you should do a trans body upgrade as the crawling will add a lot of extra heat. One last thing and I am not trying to discourage you from doing this but even geared and a locker in the rear, wheeling in 2 wheel drive is all about momentum not slow crawling. Im not saying bombing but faster that you may like. Just my thoughts.

Yea, I would agree with Rockdawg. I don't want to say don't do it because I always like to see people do fun projects and use some ingenuity but in all of my experience the only reason I would add a locker and gears to a 2wd would be for desert "prerunning." And as he said its about speed and momentum, not crawling. If you want to crawl just get a 4x4 based model and add to it; or you might consider getting to be a crawler with a solid axle conversion. I have seen 2WD Prerunner Tacomas become SAS 4x4s without much problem because adding a transfercase and front live axle can cost as little as the factory 4wd option. I'm not sure how the electronics would work out with it either, but whatever you decide good luck! I'm in Tucson also and if you feel like hitting some trails sometime hit me up, albeit probably more dirt roads with that 2wd, haha, JK!

RockDawg you need to come out with us sometime and see what the CRunner can do. Also, I would love to get your guys opinions first hand maybe over a beer!

I do intend to get a locker too so that isn't the issue I plan on going ARB air as well.

I am always looking for people for trips. FYI I have done 7 passes in CO including the 2nd tallest with no problems. I can do most all of chiva (backway) I would never try the front even with 4x4. I have done all of chimney rock. And a few spots around pinetop and more in Co.
