New speaker advice

So I just bought my 4runner yesterday and love it. it's an 04 SR5 with only 44K on it! the only thing getting me so far is the crappy stock system. before finally buying my 4R, i test drove an 03 4R with the JBL synthesis system in it and was very impressed with it. if somebody could point me in the right direction on where i should go with my sound system it would be appreciated. i kinda am on a budget so keep that in mind and i would like to keep the system at just door speakers and maybe adding a sub in the right rear quarter panel ( like in the JBL system) if possible. thanks in advance!

Go get the scion navigation system made by alpine. It's a great addition and pumps more watts to the speakers. Then if you need additional bass, you can always add a sub.

The JBL system rocks (for a stock system). I just replaced the h/u with a Kenwood DNX7100 and will be swapping the rest of the speakers, amp, sub in a few days (new stuff on order listed in previous posts).

I'll let you know how the new stuff sounds - but if it wasn't for replacing the the factory 6disc JBL head unit with new navi system, I would not have gotten any new components - as they really do sound great.

fyi - if you're interested in my jbl synth system let me know before I box it up and shove it in the attic.

looksstock, what all would be invovled in installing the JBL system besides replacing the HU and the speakers? Just that? I'm new to this kind of modding as i just came from a silverado and used to modding the outside, not the inside.

i was just lookin around the web site and i now have one more question. will the jbl system work in my 4runner since it only has the 6 piece system? what needs to be done to achieve this if not.

I'm certainly no pro, but I've learned a few things from the folks on this forum. I believe that as long as all the components are the jbl synthesis ones, there should not be much of an issue to "making it work". Install the speakers, the jbl sub and amp, and the jbl head unit and it should work.

I'm not sure if your 4runner has the center channel (front center built in to dash) or the rear fillers (upper rear pylons - usually mirrors). Since you probably don't have these (only come with the jbl), you should be able to forego the center speaker and the rear fillers but still get the benefit of the amp, sub, and h/u (in fact the system may play louder without the added resistance).

yea, it doesnt have the center speaker up front and it does have the mirrors in the back. i could probably could just remove the mirrors and put the speakers in if i wanted, but as you said, it may play louder w/o the extra speakers. btw, how much would you want for those speakers?

I need the JBL factory spacers for the rear doors. The ones that the actual speaker screws into. Would you sell them?

You will need to fabricate a cable between the amp in the rear and the HU. Obtaining the connectors is almost impossible so be sure you get as much as possible.

ok, so i'd just be better off getting some aftermarket speakers. besides the JBL sub, has anyone put a sub and a box in that back compartment where the JBL synthesis sub goes? pics?

better yet, how about some suggestions on what i should do? is the scion H/U really that much better than the stock one? like i said before im new to the 4runner thing, so any help would be apperciated!

Scion HU

You asked if the Scion unit was that much better than the stock unit. Yes, it's way better. It's not a custom, no-expense-spared system. It has enough power to sound ok, decent features if you add satellite and iPod, it's cheap, and since it's plug-and-play, it's easy.

morbius - If I don't keep the rear pylon speakers for "filler", I'll sell them. (I'm thinking of running those rears with the sub on the last channel - not sure if it will sound any better/worse though).

fishin - I had a hard time finding a decent sub/amp that would fit in the same place the stock jbl goes. I haven't started the install yet, but the Pioneer shallow 8" sub and alpine pdx-5 channel appear to be one of the few I think might fit without doing any cutting.

The scion h/u definitely has more features/functions. But, if you just want simple clean/good sound - the jbl synth w/Toyo head unit will do just fine.

That sounds great. I just have the mirrors in the way back and would need just about everything to put in those little fill tweets But I need to finish the doors first. Pics would be great!
