New Speakers-Choices?

The speakers on the 4Runner are pretty bad and I'd like to get some new ones. My system is 100% stock. I'd like to throw some new front and rear speakers in it and I want to spend around $200. The fronts are 6.5s components and the rears are 5.25. I don't mind spending the money on a amp to help power the speakers, but I want to keep my stock head unit. There are so many different options, features and brands when looking at audio stuff and I have no idea what I'm looking at. Below are a few that I saw reviews on though crutchfield, then found them cheaper on Amazon. Does anybody have any advice at speaker choices or what I should be looking for/at?

Fronts I was looking at:

A lot of it depends on what type of music you listen to, and what type of sound you are wanting. All the brands previously mentioned are good. Memphis Audio and JL Audio are, IMO, for good lows are powerful bass. Sony is a quality speaker, that does lows, mids, and highs pretty well. Same goes for the Boston Acoustic, but more of a studio or concert hall sound, a lot of sound depth if that makes sense. Personally, I like Alpine component speakers the best. They have some of the best sound clarity around, which works great for my eclectic music tastes. Install is easy. So easy, even a caveman can do it. :lmao: Look at these two for front and rear: Alpine - Type-S 6-1/2" 2-Way Coaxial Car Speakers with Poly-Mica Cones (Pair) - SPS-600
Alpine - Type-S 5-1/4" 2-Way Coaxial Car Speakers with Poly-Mica Cones (Pair) - SPS-500.

Over the past four vehicles I have owned I have had 4 different brand speakers. My advice is to go and listen to a couple of different speakers and hear what sounds right for you. It doesn't matter how much they cost, how great the reviews are or how cool they look if it doesn't sound right to you. We all have our own bias and interpretation of sound so go with what you like.

That said, I personally like Alpine and JL Audio everything.

I recently put Infinity Kappas all around in my Runner. I found the components to be a little bright until I balanced everything out with a subwoofer. I put Infinity Reference components in my girlfriend's car around the same time and was very impressed with their sound...if I'd have heard them side-by-side first I probably would have gone with the References in the 4Runner as well and saved a little cash.

Any of these speakers are going to benefit greatly from an amplifier. I'd go so far as to say it's a must. You'll get much better sound if you push them a little harder.
 
Polk Speakers

I have the Polk MM6501 components in the front and rear. They are powered by a JL amp. The JL amp and (its the weakest 4 channel JL makes 80x4 RMS) is just too much for the speakers. It's actually pretty pathetic how over rated the polk speakers are. They say MM6501 can handle 120 watts RMS. That is so far from the truth, maybe around 40 or 50 watts RMS. Personally my Rockford Fosgate FNQ components sounded better and handled much more power. They are not cheap but just some input. I'm sure some will disagree with me, but personally I haven't had much luck with them. Save your money and go with something else. The JL amp is on the other hand one of the best amps I have ever owned. JL makes great quality products.

I have Infinity Reference 6.5s and i think they're great. They have been very durable over the years that I've had them. My other choice would probably be alpine type R.
 
I would like to keep my stock head unit and run an amp to help the speakers get the extra power they need to get the better sound. Apparently my 4Runner has a factory amp behind the head unit that pushes out 10 watts RMS per channel. I'm assuming I would need to bypass this factory amp and wire in a aftermarket amp. Would I need a line output converter to make this work? The speakers I am looking at are 50-70 watts RMS.

Thats interesting...I guess some manufacturers are a little "biased" in there RMS/peak ratings.
 
Go to monoprice.com and you could pick up a pair of 100 watt speakers for 15 Bucks, and they sound pretty good in my runner.

Yeah I was pretty pissed. I thought I did my homework and still got burnt. And Polk home audio speakers are great so I thought they would be good for the truck too. They do however make the MOMO series. I personally have not had any expierience with these and they are not cheap.
 
amazon has a boss audio 8 inch sub that might fit under your front seat for around 90 bucks. a sub would definatly help.
