new sub/amp questions??????

I'm driving a 89 jetta. The trunk is large and has planty of room for my subs and amp. What I'm wondering is what I've chosen gonna work good. I have very little knolege about any of this stuff.

When I sold my truck I kept my JL Audio 1000/8w0 4. Its in a truck box. Powering it is a pice of CRAP road gear 2-way 80watt amp. It was all i needed behind the seat of my truck, hit hard enough for me. But with it in the trunk of the jetta you can hardly hear it at anything over 30mph.


From what I have gathered on the inter net I'd like to get a 10 inch sub, It's big enough to hear in the trunk of a car, but small enough to fit in the extended cab of a truck.

I like the looks of the alpine type R's and they seem cheep enough on ebay. So what the heck do I want? 2ohms 4ohms? Is there any other sub out there that I should be looking into.


The amp I have chosen is an Alpine V12 M301, friend has one for sale that I can get cheep. Is this the right one for the type R? Does it have enough power for the sub? I assume I'm going be able to hear it going down the road as well as the people walking down the road. Specs are below.

Is it worth biulding my own box? My dads a carpenter and has all the tools to do it. I dont really car it it is carpeted. But it looks like i can get boxes cheep on ebay. Any difference in boxes, are some better than others? Does this sub need to be ported?

In my opinion, it's always worth building the box yourself if you don't have the money to buy a dedicated box for a particular type of sub, like the JL Stealthbox, passive/powered Bazooka tube or powered Infinity Basslink. You can build a box better than those cheaply built ones on ebay, and usually for less money too.

Match the impedance level of the sub to the amp for the recommended RMS wattage of the sub. For your situation, it looks like you should get the dual voice coil 4ohm sub, wire it for a total 2 ohm load, and then your amp will be able to put out 350w @ ohms, which would be fine for the Type R, just don't turn up the gains all the way, since the sub can only handle 300w RMS.

Maybe someone with specific experience in using a Type R can help you out more.

I'm not set on the type R It just seems like a good cheep sub. Anything else out there like it?

The amp above is gone, friend sold it. So I'm now surching for an amp. Any sugestions?

I just grabbed a type R 10" on ebay. I pm'd you, but after some resurch I dont think its got enough power. The type R is 300 rms. I am still looking for a amp if anyone of you have suggestions.
