KZN-185, what a beautiful Hilux Surf. I, myself am an enthusiast for Hilux Surfs, and believe the model in Japan is much more appealing. I thought I'd share a few pictures of my very own 4Runner in which I have slowly, but progressively acquired parts from Japan to fit specs of a Hilux Surf.

Does anyone know if the rear tire carrier from a Surf would work on a USDM 4Runner?

Just curious, why is the rear tire carrier desirable? For me, I really want to get a Hilux Surf SSR-g, but the only thing I don't like about it is the rear tire carrier is standard on that model. I just ask cause for me, the only benefit I see from it is that you might have more clearance for offroading, but what I don't like about it is if someone is parked too close behind you, you wouldn't be able to open your rear tailgate. If I ever do get the 3rd gen SSR-g (won't be till at least next year as Canada does not allow overseas importation of vehicles unless they are 15 years old), I would probably go on Ebay and find the parts for the underbody tire mounting kit and put my tire there and just sell the swing tire carrier. At least if I do manage to get one, then I know where I can sell the rear tire carrier.

I see. Now I get why I see so many lifted 2nd gens with spare tires on the roof or on a rear tailgate swing.

wowo thats sexy I would say. I tried to find that kind of bumper guard here in North America but looks they dont have it here. Do you know how much it would cost there in Japan and is it possible to get it shipped here in North America? Please and Thanks,

Is it possible to import these to USA and have them be street legal? How much of a hassle and cost would be involved? That is ONE RARE RIG in the states, if there is any at all. I wouldn't mind just having the diesel setup, but that stock stereo is great. Other countries always get the good stuff.

I think it's a pretty big hassle but not impossible. I know that in Canada you have to wait for a car to be 15 years old before you can import it hassle-free and in the states it's 25 years.

I looked into importing a Audi RS6 Avant for a friend and I think it was going to cost around 30k, there was a good chance they would rip it apart and there was no guarantee that it would make it in.

I'm always looking for new junkyards with Surfs but I haven't had any luck yet in my area. If I come across one I was planning on getting all of the JDM specific parts and posting them for sale.

I have those rims for my winter tires, they came with the truck. It's a Japanese brand but all it says is Off Performer in cursive on the rim.

I just finished my OME lift last week and have new rims and tires, I'll post pics when I get a chance.

As I understand it, there are some states that have gray market import laws that allow for a car less than 25 years old to be imported if they have passed certain emissions and crash testing. I don't believe the surf is one of the allowed ones. I've been looking at 60 series land cruisers to bring back with me as they are on the allowed list. There's some kick ass ones here...

Nope, no airbags in either of our two in Brazil. Second belongs to my ex-mother-in-law so I don't list it, but I get to use it.

Lift is from Toytec, OME 881/890 with front top plates. Tires are 285/75/16 and the rims are some random Japanese brand that I found used, along with the tires, for $500. Exhaust (I know, I know) is Suxson JDM style which replaced the pipe from the mid-cab bolt connection back.
