New System - Speakers Hum

I am in the process of installing a new set of door speakers (Infinity Kappa 6.5" components - front and rear) and an Infinity amp (475A) in my '06 SR5. I have a Pioneer AVIC D3 head unit that I installed last year.

The problem that I have is that when the key is turned on I can hear a high frequency humming "niose" from the speakers when the volume is turned all the way down to "0" on the head unit. The problem is more noticable on the rear tweeters than in the front. Also, the problem really does not seem to be noticable when the key is turned to the accessory position - it is far more prominant with the key turned to the second stage of the ignition switch (where the dash lights come on before starting).

For reference, I have run all new spearker wires (Monster home audio cables) to each speaker and have termined the old wires in the doors. I used #4 Streetwires up to the battery source and grounded the unit under one of the seat bolts.

Any advise on eliminating the noise/hum would be greatly appreciated.

If you unplug the audio wires from the HU to the amp is the noise gone?
 
Yes - when I pull the RCA cables from the HU out of the amp, it eliminates about 98% of the noise. The remaining noise is far more tolerable. The noise also does not change as the key is turned from the ACCY postion to the ON postion.

What does that indicate...?

You still have 2% of the same exact noise? I would first look for a better ground for the amp, it should be dead silent. You need to go to bare metal. Also the power wire to the amp should be kept away from the HU wires. They should not be bundled together
 
drmorbius - I am not sure that it is the exact same noise or from the same source. It does sound like a different frequency so I suspect the two sounds are unrelated. I have tried moving the ground and rerouting the HU leads, but get the same results when the HU leads are reconnected.

Would it indicate that the problem is coming from the head unit if the noise occurs when the HU is connected to the amp...and is significantly reduced when the HU leads are disconnected?

Also, is it usually necessary to change any settings in the head unit when adding an amp?

As I understand this you have had this HU in and working for awhile. Is this correct? if so it has to be related to something you have changed recently. Are you using high quality rca to rca cables? How long are they? Also what did you mean when you said you terminated the old speaker wires in the doors? I guess I need to know more details on the history of your build.
What settings are you referring to in the HU.
 
Good point...that is correct...the head unit has been installed for about a year and I have had no issues.

I am using two different sets of RCA cables - my amp installation kit is made by StreetWires and that set of RCA cables is being used for the front speakers. I picked up a set of Rockford Fosgate RCA cables for the rears. The Rockford Fosgate wires are 16

I zip tied them to the other wires in the doors. I wanted to leave them in tact in the event that I wanted to remove the system for resale.

Interestingly, I did notice while I was just working on it that the left rear speakers make the majority of the original noise. And, when I start the car, it gets even worse.

The noise does seem to fluctuate when move the HU RCA cables around in the dash, but it never goes away completely.

Two things. 1. Is there any chance at all that any of the old speaker wires could be touching metal inside the doors? 2. When you unplug the HU cables to the amp unplug them from behind the head unit and leave the other end connected at the amp. Is the noise there?
 
drmorbius, Elusive and mako17 - thanks for the feedback! I have been traveling and have not gotten to work on the system for the last few days. I will be back at it this weekend and will give these suggestions a shot.
