Well I decided to upgrade to a 99 limited with 70k miles on it. so far I am very pleased with this ride. There is however one thing that really drives me crazy; the fact that it doesnt autolock the doors when its put into drive and doesnt unlock the doors when put in park. Is this normal or no? can this be changed?

thanks

To my knowledge, the autolock feature does not come on 3rd gens. What did you upgrade from...a 2nd gen 4R?

I owned a '95 4Runner some years back that had this locking feature you're describing...and really enjoyed having it. It was a nice feature Toyota included.

I did miss having it though when I upgraded to a '99 and later to my current '02 4Runner. My wife's '00 4R does not have it either. I have just gotten used to not having it.

Maybe someone will chime in that has a possible solution to add this feature to 3rd gens.

I could've sworn that if you had the RS3000 alarm, you could set it to lock automatically. Could be mistaken, though.

Why do you want that auto locking feature? My father-in-law has a buick that does that, and it annoys the crap out of me!
Whats the point of it?

well i upgraded from a 98 basic SR5. I am used to the auto lock feature because thats how it is on my 04 sequoia and i really enjoy it.

on my truck, when all of the doors are shut, they auto lock when i start the engine. they don't auto unlock until i turn the engine off. oh - and it's the factory alarm.... the something 3000 i think.

so they are not actuated by gear position, but rather the key position.

hope it helps.

Well, seems I stand corrected :D. I have owned a handful of different year 3rd gens and none of them had the RS3000 alarm. That'd explain why I assumed this auto lock feature was not an option...I had yet to own a 3rd gen w/ a factory alarm.

My 2nd gen did not have a factory alarm, but had the auto lock feature.

Thanks for setting me straight!

well i wouldnt mind it if they auto-locked when i turned the car on either. is there any way to get this feature and if so what alarm do i need to have?

pretty sure you need the factory rs3000 alarm system, but i also believe that the higher end aftermarket alarms will also give you that feature.

if you in fact don't have the factory alarm, you can check out circuit city or hifi buys and check out their systems. i'd stay away from best buy....used to work there many moons ago... ;):
