New Tires, '08.

Hey guys, I know this has been beaten to death over and over, but I just took my car in for a 30k mile check up, and apparently I need new tires. I have stock Michelin's on there right now, and they said that 2 of the tires are at the wear indicators, so they could just replace those 2. They told me 2 Michelin's were going to be about $540. They also told me that they could replace all 4 tires with Dunflops for about $750. Both of those prices seem high to me.

So I guess my question is, should I replace the tires with Toyota? Or should I get myself Revo's or something. If I'm going to get completely different tires, I might want to get them a little larger than what's on there now. I don't want to get a ridiculously large looking tire, just maybe a size up.

If I'm going to be replacing the tires with something else, I kind of would like some input on tires to look for, maybe sizes, and prices.

I put nitto Tg's on mine 265/70/17 they are a lil wider and a lil taller than stock but not drasticlly. The revo's are also a nice choice of tire

I agree, 265/70/17 is a very popular, non-rubbing option (even w/ no lift) that costs .5mpg-1mpg (usually) and messes w/the speedo minimally (3%).

The Revos are a very nice choice as are the Nitto's and the GY Wrangler Silent Armour. If you mostly street drive and don't want an A/T several have used the GY Triple Tread Fortera with great results. There's many other options too. Most really like slight size upgrade, I am partial to the 255/75s:D There's no real advantage to the dealer's tires.

Which tires wore out, front or back? If it's the front you might want to have them rotate the rears to the front and then check the alignment. Alternatively there's nothing wrong with a reliable, good tire shop aligning it. There's nothing high-tech or magic about the T4R front-end. Alignment is straight forward and easy.

Hmmm.... I'm really liking the Revo 2's. So say I wanted just a LITTLE bigger of a tire, what size or numbers would I be looking out for? And also, how are the Revo's on the highway? From what I've been reading, people haven't noticed any road noise. There's no off roading in this vehicle in the near future, but I do want a more rugged looking tire that can handle the Forbes #1 worst city to live in during the winter... weather (If that made sense haha)

It sounds like the Revos are for you... The size should be P265/70/17. Make sure it's not the LT265/70/17, that's a heavier truck tire that doesn't fit your mission. The other thing with Revos is they have a max pressure of 44psi instead of the Michelin's 35psi. Most like the Revo at 37-40psi. One poster w/Revo2's said 35psi was the 'right' number for him. Point is the best balance of ride, handling, wear & mpg seems to occur at around 37 rather the OE Michelin's 32psi.

CJ3Flyr gave you great advice. I had Michelin Cross-Terrains (2 sets) on my 4Runner for the past 90,000 miles and never liked their performance on wet or snow covered roads, much less off-road. Couldn't wait for the second set to wear out so I could replace them.

I went with the REVO 2's at the slightly larger 265/70/17 size and have been extremely pleased, especially with their winter performance. BTW, I live near Chardon so I have lots of winter driving experience.


While my only negative is worse mileage with the larger AT tires, I am very pleased with their performance.

Visit TireRack and strongly consider the top AT tires:

Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 2
Firestone Destination A/T
Michelin LTX A/T 2
Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor

Probably all good choices.

30k sounds very short... Are you sure? Did you do the Lincoln penny test? If you're very close and want tires that's cool. If it's not the right time, financially speaking, make sure they aren't just trying to sell tires.

Sounds like you know exactly what I'm talking about with the weather thing! haha. I live right on Lake Erie about 30 minutes West of Cleveland. So you have the slightly larger size Revo 2's. Did you get a tire for the spare too? Or do you have the stock tire? And also, do you have a lift on your truck, or like a level kit or anything?
 
Well I have noticed a little slippage in 2wd lately with this new intense snow storm going on now. But I told the dealership to not do the tires now. I've also been trying to find a reason since the day I bought the truck to get new tires haha.

Yes, I did get the same REVO2 as a spare as well (I rotate all five tires so the spare needed to be replaced as well). My truck is stock - no lift - and no evidence of rubbing. Only negative is about 15% worse gas mileage - a trade-off I was willing to make. My traction light has rarely come-on since I installed the new tires. I could have gone another 10 - 15K on my Michelins but I am glad I bit the bullet: peace of mind and higher confidence level have greater value.

BTW: Glock 17, 21 , and 23 (carry piece) here!

Sounds good. I'm not sure what size rims I have on my 4Runner now, but they're the stock SR5 ones (So maybe 17"?). For the stock SR5 rims, what numbers on the tires should I be looking for if I want a slightly larger tire than stock?
 
Ok, I think I'm going to get the Revo 2's. Been reading a lot of really good reviews about these tires. Next question... do I REALLY need to buy a tire for the spare?

Not really but many prefer it. I did because my tires were so cheap I wanted to get an extra 20% miles on cheap, good rubber. The other thing is I drive back and forth to S Florida from ATL and didn't want to worry about it. I also made a bigger size jump than you did. If I went with 265/70's I might not bother...

And also, I'm looking for tires for my parents BMW 2004 X5 3.0i. I'm looking for tires at 235/65/17.

My dad wants a more hardcore "rugged" look, but doesn't understand why they don't make them in that size.

I was looking at the Pirelli Scorpions, any feed back on those?

You want the cheaper ones. The $195 ones are those 'LT' rated tires we were saying you don't want. The expensive ones weigh more, cost more, require more air and are great on a 2500/3500 series pickup. They have too many plies and would just ride rough and use extra gas on your T4R.
 
Sounds good.

I tried to negotiate with National Tire and Battery, but they said they can't match Tire Rack. So looks like I'm going to be getting the Pirelli Scorpions (x4), and the Revo 2's (x4) for about $1,350 shipped, and than NTB is going to put them on for $20 a tire. After that, we have to pay NTB AGAIN to do an $80 alignment.
