I pulled off the front mud flaps today because of a slight rub on the drivers side. It didn't happen often, and it wasn't much but since I offroad so much, I don't want it while my tires are flexed and I have to turn.
Just a heads up for anyone considering 285's as their next choice, but most are already aware of this.

I really want 285s but I am concerned about not having a spare. What are the pros and cons of having a sexy big tire but then no spare?
Do these big tires blow out very often? What do most of you folks do including you HB 4x4 with out a spare?

so if you have a 285/70/17 tire in your spare...that should mean i could fit a 285/70/17 cooper in there right?

I also have an aftermarket exhaust which might play a factor. You'll have to test fit it yourself. If the Coopers are any larger than 32.7 it will not fit without rubbing badly. I have to keep an eye on this because it could still be problematic (hypothetically) while offroading when that bar moves up/down with the axle. You could always try finding a well used Cooper to throw in your spare. As my tires get worn, the gap that my spare has should increase, so if you find a well worn tire, like 10K-20K miles on it, it may fit.

I am not sure of the size....but thats a good idea about getting a worn one to put under.
Are these bigger tires less prone to getting a "flat"?

Size doesn't play a huge factor in whether or not you'll get a flat. Keep them evenly worn (rotated often), maintain the correct tire pressure, and watch where you are driving.
The strength of the tire, size of the object you run over, etc are larger factors in getting a flat.

Darn it! I can not decide what tire size to go with! I keep going back and forth...its a paid to decide with this new 3/2 lift I bought.

Personally I say go with the 285's, but make your own decision. I am selling my 265's right now with 12K miles on them because they looked too small. So make sure you get it right the first time.
Now, enough hijacking my thread!

Josh is right...the quick answer is no. Since Josh did not get the LT-rated tire, his new tires are just bigger, but no stronger than his old 265 tires. You can make an argument that since his tire is wider & taller, his sidewall is more exposed, esp. when you air down (for off-roading). The exposed sidewall is good (if it's strong) to protect your rims from rocks, but can be a weak spot if the sidewall is not strong.
BTW, for me, i think that ALL 5 tires should be the same size. 285 Nittos, like Josh said, is the only one that i know of that can fit in the spare location...i am not sure if his exhaust has anything to do with it. But, i would make sure that your spare is equal size to your other 4 tires, esp. if you take your 4runner off-road.

Most 4RUNNER OWNERS who choose to upsize need to make a few decisions when choosing to upsize to 33" or larger. The big issue is where the heck to put that 5th one. In a perfect world, we would tuck that big meat right in the stock location.
Why did you choose the Terra Grapplers over more agressive tires, such as the Dune Grappler or something? I would have figured you would have upgraded considering how much you offroad. But I know the Terra Grapplers are a great tire.

Either way, I chose the Nitto's because they have great reviews, and outperform many other AT's. The only other AT I would consider is the BFG KO's but A) the 285 spare would not fit, B) The KO's are over hyped and everyone has them (I have worked very hard to make my truck look unique) and C) when searching in depth for reviews on them both, the Nitto's have a strong following at being better in snow than the KO's even though the KO's have the snowflake symbol. And I realize I will get flamed for that from Thai, since that little symbol is his holy grail.
I am also stating the snow performance based off of hours of reading reviews of people who had switched to TG's from KO's. I am not claiming to have any "proof"- it's all based on customer reviews, and their own opinions.
