New tires.....help me pick

I'm going to be buying tires soon and I need help deciding. I was originally gooing to go with the NTG but I really like the look of the km2's. I do mostly on road driving so i'm sure that an At tire would be smarter be i'm just not sure. Any advice?

also, what size can i run without spacers on the stock 5 spokes? 285/75/16? 255/85/16?

Have you looked at the Duratracs? Aggressive tread, but quiet on road.

Are you lifted? If not the biggest you can run is 265/75/16 which they make.

Yeah i've got the OME 881's with 5mm trim packer up front and 891's with 10mm trim packer in the rear.

EDIT: to compare: the duratrac 285/75R16 on discodirect is 984 with road hazard warranty.

I dont' know, really. I was just quoting the price that I saw. It likely fluctuates based on location

i was searching for tires two weeks ago and i can tell u that discount tire direct has higher prices if u compare it to tirerack.com. I then looked at buying them on ebay bc theyre cheaper and still new. So ur best bet to me is to buy them on ebay and then take it to discount tire so they can mount them and u can always add the coverages of road hazard and wat not at the time of install.

Tirerack.com charges shipping and discounttiredirect.com doesn't. Between free shipping and no tax, they are usually cheaper than tirerack, at least they were when I bought my last set of tires. I got my new 255s on ebay this time though - (4) 255/85R16 Maxxis Bighorn 8 plys (D rated) for $672 OTD.

You'll need at least .25" spacers if you're running 285s. The 255s don't require spacers at all. I highly recommend the 255/85 Bighorns like I have - I'm loving these tires, they are amazing off road and in the snow and the larger diameter kicks ass. I love the 255s so much, I'm over 285s for good.

BTW, on a side note you may want to create a signature. I though you had a '05 Limited 4runner because of your name and was wondering if you posted in the wrong forum. I realize you have a 3rd gen because you mentioned 881s and 891s later in the thread, but it is sorta confusing.

ya i know wat u mean brian but i was including shipping into the costs when i was looking at them. I reasearched alot of different prices but overall ebay was the cheapest.

Ya about the 285s, they do need spacers... i just got my 1.25" spacers in the mail yeasterday. I like my 285s tho i was supposed to get some 255s and would have liked to test out the difference between the two. I ended up getting the 285s bc my friend works at discount so i got mine for really cheap.

I have had the 285 km2's on for about 8,000 miles now. No noticable wear on the tires, i am about to rotate them, i'm hoping to get 40k out of them and at this rate i easily should. I have them on factory wheels and did not need a spacer at all , plenty of clearance. They are very quiet on the road and no vibrations on the highway.

Now keep in mind, when I went to 255s I wanted to keep the stance I had with my 285s w/ stock wheels because I liked where it was. So I did the math and basically I'd be going from an 11" wide tire to a 10" wide tire so I knew the 255s would be sucked in ~.5" on each side for a total of a 1" loss in my overall track width. The stock wheels had 4.65" BS so I went with 4" BS on my new Cragar Soft 8 wheels and that effectively pushed the 255s out .65" and my track width stayed roughly the same.

When I was running 285s, I needed wheel spacers in the front so they wouldn't rub the UCAs (I went with 1" spacers) and even though with the 255s I don't need the spacers, I chose to leave them on because it helps with cornering and reducing my COG with that extra 1" on each side to widen the front track. I don't use any spacers on the rears because they make the tires rub my fender flares. It was a little bit of guess work, but it worked out perfectly and no rubbing.

BTW, 255s should really be considered 34" tires (everyone calls them a 33 or a 33.5) because I parked mine right next to my neighbor's jeep w/ 35x12.50s on it and his were only .5" taller than my 255s.

EDIT^^^: I went out and measured my brand new 255s and they were 33" exactly with the weight of the truck on them and my neighbor's 35s only measured 33.5 with 1/2 worn tread so I'll say 34" when they were new. I'm guessing 285s measure around the 32.5" range new (anyone care to confirm?) so I think the 255s are a nice in-between "33s" and "35s".
