New Tires - Incredible Difference!

I purchased my 2003 4Runner Limited V8 two weeks ago with 32,000 miles. It is extremely clean and is loaded. It had the original factory Dunlop tires and they were in bad shape. The right front had extreme wear and dryrot.

I changed out all four to Michelin Cross Terrain this morning and what an incredible difference! I have never seen such a change from just new rubber. The few rattles that I was hearing are gone and the truck rides like brand new.

If anyone else is in need of tires, I highly recommend the Michelin's. They were from Costco, installed at $650.

I agree with you, the Michelin's came standard on the new 4Runner and I noticed what a very nice ride and handling they provided. Just the right tire for my needs.

:iagree: I had them on my last 4R - a 97 limited. Have them on my wifes 06 Sequoia - Have them on my 07 T4R. Great tires! Worth the extra money.

I remember when my stock tires wore out to the point where the ride comfort went to hell and road noise increased significantly . its actually much better with the mud tires for feel and sound. U get the whirr of the tires but not road noise so much....

Did you start with Dunlops or Mich?

I almost can't wait for my Dunlops to wear out. I've got 13K on my '07. I've had them road forced 3 times....the first time they found 2 bad tires, the other times they found nothing wrong and were ok for about 3-4K then started vibrating again.

I swear by Michelins...they've never let me down on any vehicle I've had.

When were they standard and where?? Here in Texas I could only get the Dunlops.

Michelins are by luck of the draw. I haven't seen 17" Michelins before on SR5s and 2003-05 Limiteds (not saying they don't exist either). But on 2006+ Limiteds, 18" rims, it depends much like whether it's build in Tahara or the Hino plant. I've seen more that have Michelins than Bridgestone.

But if it's a Sport Edition, you're only going to find them with Dunlops.

Thanks - I have 17" Aluminium wheels on an SR5 - probably explains why I couldn't find it....but it'll have Michelins when these wear out.

Cross-Terrains

Well I know I am in the minority here. I have had the Cross-Terrains on my 04 since the day I got it (two sets - long story) and while they offer outstanding ride quality and longevity, I have never been happy with their rain, snow, and ice performance.

I will be looking for something with better wet traction capabilities next time around.

I will admit the ride is excellent. I have had many people ride in and drive my Runner and they were all impressed re. the ride quality for a truck based SUV. I know the Cross-Terrains are largely responsible here.

Any problems with balancing on the Michelins?

My '05 came with Cross-Terrains and they are great tires. Love'em.
The Cross-Terrains supplied by Toyota as original equipment have a different tread pattern than the Cross-Terrains you see on Tirerack. The ones on Tirerack have a terrible tread pattern and I would never buy those.
It's like Toyota had Michelin make this tread pattern just for them.

This is a new vehicle with a little over 500 miles so it's a little early to tell if there is any balancing problems on them. But so far there is no shake or shimmy at any speed.

well you're ahead of me - mine shook right off the lot. I thought I had it fixed when they replaced the 'bad" tires - but the shimmy came back. had them balanced again, and it came back again...seems air pressure effects it too...either way, I can't wait to take the Dunlops off.
