New Tires = New Shocks? 100k

I have 100k on my 06 4Runner Sport. Am getting close to needing new tires again. I asked at a local shop today and they told me don't bother putting nice tires on there if you are not going to replace your shocks.

Is this necessary? I have read the XREAS shocks are expensive to change. Anybody have over 100k and not changed shocks? Thanks.

XREAS is a sealed system and shouldn't require replacing at a specific mileage interval. If something is leaking on the system it's another story.

I'd agree. Don't replace the shocks unless they have a problem.

Did the tire shop say the tires are not wearing evenly? With the wheel removed, roll it along a flat surface. The centerline/hub should be rolling along in a flat line as well. If it doesn't that means the tires are out of round and it's possible the shocks are bad.

I don't know if the bounce test works for X-REAS, since it's cross linked to another shock in the diagonal corner. But for a vehicle with regular shocks, compress the shock, by applying weight on one corner at a time and letting it rebound. The vehicle should return to its normal height. If it continues to bounce/oscillate, then the shocks are bad.

I have 64K on my '05 Sport 4Runner. At this interval the X-Reas system is not what it used to be. It is more "sloppy" than when I purchased it. I had the passenger side front shock replaced under extended warranty because it was leaking.

If your unhappy with the ride and control (I am now) I understand there are bolt on shocks available that REPLACES the system. Most people have said it takes less than 1/2 hour to remove the "lines" of the system.

I read some members here that have replaced the shocks with Donahoe Racing, now Icon Vehicle Dynamics (IVD) coil overs in the front and shocks in the back say it corners just as good as it did with X-REAS.

The lines have a disconnection point which allows for removing the shocks and system without draining the fluid. Do not disconnect the lines at the tops of the shocks--it will ruin the shock.
