New to Denver

What's up guys, long time stalker, owned 2010 Trail for 4 years now, no mods to speak of, just relocated to Denver from Austin, TX. Got stuck in the snow off 285 behind idiots in Subarus, BMWs and Suburbans this weekend trying to make it to Breck for some skiing. After puling them out and rescuing all I could I'm making a list of mods that "are required for driving Colorado backroads..." at least that's what I'm telling my wife. Need more recovery gear, lift, winch, etc.

Any tips on good shops, good places to wheel? I know google works, but I'm looking for local opinions/knowledge.

I'm also looking for info on fly fishing and duck hunting if any of y'all pursue those as well. I've visited frequently but never had more than a weeks time up here. PM me if anyone is bored and looking to meet up during the week. I have some time before I start my new job.

Not from there but everywhere I been to I seem to get better local group support from the local Facebook clubs I'm sure they are easy to find

Anyways... I know a lot of people on the forum are from Denver, any suggestions?

A few things:

  • Welcome
  • Last weekend was a pretty large storm, some times it is not worth it. I usually go the day after.
  • 285 Sucks, especially where it drops down to 1 lane in each direction (My Opinion, YMMV)
  • Mods for Driving in Colorado Winter: Snow Tires. Your secret is safe with us though.

Fly Fishing: I'm just taking it up and I plan to learn on the upper Colorado River near Granby. Going to start a few lessons soon. I have friends who swear by the Arkansas River near Canon City.

Well there's a lot of local businesses that are big in the t4r aftermarket parts and accessories. Toytec in Northglenn, RCI in Fort Collins, Gobi in Aurora, SLEE in Golden...smaller shops like Insain Fab in Fort Collins, Hefty Fab in CoSprings.

For local install shops, check out RSG Auto on West Colfax in Lakewood.

Fishing spots: expect everywhere to be crowded except maybe early mornings on weekdays from now...well...year around. 11 Mile Canyon is good, Deckers, Miracle Mile, Big Thompson, Boulder Creek, and little creeks in Rocky Mtn. Nat. Park like Glacier Creek. Check out the websites for what's been working. Denver flyshops like Anglers All, Trouts, Denver Fly Shop are all good...also Discount Fishing and Tackle has great prices on flies.

Slaughterhouse gulch is a fun trail and its pretty close to Denver. Also if you're on Facebook join the Colorado Toyota 4x4 group. Good peeps and they always arrange trail runs.
 
Welcome, good luck with the ski traffic on a powder day, insane. I got 20 days in is year, which was great for me. The nice thing about hwy 285 is that there are some great places to explore offroad when it's dry, if you have a crazy schedule that doesn't allow for meeting up with the groups like me you could get Charles Welles books, good place to start for trail listings. The other is traildamage.com where you will find great info.

Oh and just tell the wife you HAVE to get a front bumper for the winch you are buying as well! Not to mention offroad lights for safety! I've used high country 4x4 and they do great work, several members have gone there.
 
I would also add Mt Herman in Monument. TONS of trails to be had that goes all over the place. Don't have to take it via Monument, but I do as I am in the area. I believe Georgia Pass is pretty cool as well. Found that one by accident and had to yield a few times going up hill to MT. bikers.

Also highly recommend RCI and Hefty Fabworks. Big fans of RCI armor and Hefty's bumpers and sliders. Great products and good people too.

Sorry if I offend some but "a lot" of Subaru drivers drive one speed no matter the road conditions. Either way they annoy the hell out of you no matter what state you live. ;)
 
We do some off-road and custom stuff at my shop in boulder but best I know of is addicted off-road in fort Collins. Fly spots are secret lol but definitely check out the roaring fork if you're in aspen area. You can have fun in clear creek and boulder creek too close to denver. Trails, check out the stuff around rollinsville. Moffet tunnel area has some fun stuff with a mix of easy and medium difficulty and lots of offshoots to play around on that it isn't hard to get outta trouble if you get in over your head. Jenny creek up there is pretty cool and not anything too bad. Also in that area mammoth gulch is a fun easy one to drive. Further north towards Estes just north of ward the trail by camp dick is pretty awesome and you get to drive across a lake. Medium difficulty. Lots of water to cross but nothing too deep unless it's been dumping rain. There are a couple of pretty steep sections so if it's wet and you don't have aggressive tires keep that in mind. Lots of other good stuff around if you explore but like the fishing the best stuff is secret. You'll find some eventually. Good luck and welcome to the best place on earth.
 
Welcome. Our limited gets around fine but I can't wait for the tires to wear out so I can swap a better all terrain tread. Fly fishing? Get out and explore the endless opportunities and be thankful for the sometimes crowded spots. They fuel the industry in this region that is fading away in other parts of the country. Grab some maps and hit the road...have fun.
 
Im also new to Denver and was hoping to find someone help me install Bilstein 5100s all around with rear daystar spacers. I've been quoted in the 600-700$ range.

I think I can do it myself but don't know what tools will be needed and nervous about being able to assemble the shock and coil spring on the front together without being able to compress the spring :(.

I'll mention another shop in the area where I had my install done, ToyCrawlers, up in Broomfield. Guy was a mech @ Toyota and does installs in his garage shop. $400 for the install, not incl alignment, but you can get a lifetime for $200 through them which is done @ Firestone correctly.

I'd like to do it myself too, but with 3 kids and a wife, that kinda alone time doesn't exist.:thumb3:
 
If you want to beat the traffic get up really early and get on the road before everyone else does. If I am on the mountain at 8:00 I have usually beat traffic. So leaving my place at 6:00 usually. Depending on conditions.

I have had great luck with Hi Country 4x4 and Hefty Fabworks.

As far as necessary gear goes I think that's a pretty personal thing. For me it keeps changing.... Hence my ongoing build

A ton of great trails were already mentioned. And there are dozens more.
Try not to go alone unless you have the means to get unstuck. Especially in the spring.
I usually end up going alone because of my weird schedule hence my bumper and winch...

Dinner might be a bit out of my budget, beer is not! :cheers:

Who wants to help me swap out my rear springs and shocks, and knock the rear diff breather relocate! :whistle:
