2021 TRDP (Lunar Rock) - Impressions after two weeks

Nice, like I said in the post above, I had a long wait too, but it was worth it. I thought about a Bronco as well, but I started to get a little lukewarm on the design, and I needed a vehicle before 2022 anyway. And I've had my eye on 4Runners for decades. Couldn't be happier!

Definitely made the right decision! I consider this Bronco to be a first edition model because it has been so many years, and just like headlights, you never get Gen 1. You got something already proven because you know Toyota did the bare minimum these last few years lol. Possibly since the 5gen came out.

I've now got 2K miles on my 2021 Venture model, and I love mine. I will say though, coming to this from a 2012 Xterra Pro-4x, I am finding myself missing that extra power and acceleration the Xterra had over the 4Runner. I noticed it the first time I headed west on I-70, or the long steady climb up Rabbit Ears pass. I dont mind it that much, but it is definitely noticeable. For me though, the interior is a huge upgrade over the Xterra! I feel like I am driving a Mercedes compared to that Nissan!

That Xterra had a 4.0 V6 too, right? Interesting that it felt more powerful. Was the Xterra a lighter vehicle overall?

Nissans have great throttle response with its VQ variants, from the 350z/ Altima/ Maxima/ to Infiniti and beyond. As you creep over the 100k mark, the brittle interior and sensors remind you how much of your soul was sold for that peppy response. Don’t ask me how I know. Lol

Congrats OP! It’s hard to compare a new toyota truck, but the beauty of them comes a few years after ownership, when you fire it up and it still as tight as the day you rolled it off the lot.

This 4Runner is my first Toyota, I have about half a million miles on a Nissan Titan and a Nissan Xterra with no mechanical issues (that werent self-induced, LOL) I agree that the interior in the Nissans doesnt hold up. The seat on my Titan looked like a Doberman chewed it up, at about 200k. I had worn a spot on the door and on the console where my elbows rested. But, I knew whenever I went out and turned the key, it was gonna start and always run strong. I drove my Titan from Colorado to Montana and hunted for a week, miles from nowhere, when it had over 200k miles on it..
I really am impressed with the higher class feeling interior of the Toyota. Overall, the "fit and finish" just feels so much better.

I also still have 200k Nissan with no major mechanical issues. It comes with a permanently installed ODB scanner and no one is allowed to ride in it. I need to keep the interior intact lol.

I like hearing about the Nissans! Back in the 90s, my friend had a first generation Pathfinder that we drove around in the mountains in Wyoming. That or a 4Runner would have been my dream car at the time. It was so disappointing what Nissan eventually did with that line. So glad Toyota preserved the 4Runner until it was time for me to get one.

Actually, at first I wondered whether I was doing the right thing getting a 4Runner with the 6th gens right around the corner. And then, remembering the Pathfinder's ultimate fate, I decided I probably couldn't go wrong getting this 4R while they're still making them.

I got excited about the Bronco for a minute last summer but moved on from that pretty quickly too, for several reasons. I drove my mom’s first gen Explorer for a year when it was just a few years old. It was a capable vehicle, and I enjoyed driving it. But it was in the shop three or four times that year for just dumb stuff. Never had a car that bad in that way before or since (all my other cars have been Hondas or Subarus, and now the 4R).

I’ll be excited to see new Broncos on the road. My first favorite truck was an F-150 I got to drive around all summer for work when I was in high school. But every time I think about getting a Ford, I think of that Explorer.

Nice. I never drove any earlier years, though I've ridden in a few. What were the fixes for you?

I finally used the adaptive cruise control (ACC) today for the first time. I've read some criticism of the feature and was pleasantly surprised how great it worked.



I turned it on in moderate interstate traffic coming down out of the mountains into the city. That's not a situation I'd typically use cruise control in, but I wanted to give it a good test under more difficult conditions. The only ACC I have experience with was in a 2017 Honda Pilot. It was terrible in traffic -- even very light interstate traffic -- oversensitive and jerky. I ended up always deactivated the radar when using it.



The new 4R's ACC was excellent. It maintained speed just fine over 15 miles of moderately hilly interstate and reacted seamlessly to cars in my path. Really pleased -- I was sort of dreading to try it due to the negative comments I've read, but now I'm looking forward to my next road trip.

Curious, if you do not mind me asking, how much you paid for it?

I ask coming from SoCal and the local dealer telling me they received one so far and sold it for $15k over sticker. That means this person paid ~$60k to basically get the Lunar Rock color.

I paid MSRP at Mountain States Toyota in Denver. They told me it was their policy not to charge above that, and they honored that. I had to wait over three months for it though after putting down a deposit (which the dealer told me would be the case up front).

This past November I purchased a 2021 TRD ORP and I too am very happy with it. This is my 4th 4Runner over the years (01 LTD, 05 LTD, 12 Trail, and now a 21 ORP). The 05 was my wife's and was the vehicle I sold to purchase the 21. My nephew has the 01 and it is still running like new and looks like new ! In all honesty I was never really happy with the 12 Trail Edition w/KDSS and we traded it in 2017 on a 2017 Sequoia Limited (for towing purposes). I was hesitant going back to another 5th gen after not really liking the 2012 but a test drive of the 21 cured that hesitancy. For me, Toyota addressed all the issues that frustrated me with my 2012 Trail. Glad you like and are enjoying your new PRO !
