Hey guys. I just bought a 98 4runner limited with 76k on it. I paid 10k for it. Do you guys think that is a good deal? Anyway I have some more serious questions:

1. how can i tell if it really is the limited. it has leather, moonroof, cd, flares, runningboards, rack, hitch...but it only says sr5 on the back?

2.I will be driving form ny to california and want to know what i should do to posibly improve my gas mileage? does the k&n filter make much of a diiference?

3. my power antenna is bent. any recommendations on where to get a replacement besides the dealer?

thanks a lot guys.

Make sure your tires are inflated to the proper PSI.

Yes if your filter is dirty change it. K&N makes nice filters.

Do a good one over on your tuck before such a long trip.
Check all your fluids/hoses,etc.

You can get a new power antenna at Toyota for about $35 and you need a 1hour to do the install.

I just bent mine last week on a tree being bad with my truck:D

So I picked one up and allot of people bend theres so I am going to do a write up in the "classic T4R's" section with pic's.

So look for it there.

can't help you with the "limited" question mines a 2nd Gen.
but some one should chime in.But IIRC it was just a upgrade in comfort items like you described,Leather/moonroof etc.

Mike

thnaks for the reply. another thing i need help with is determing the proper plug for a 98. my manual is from a 96.

mike...when will you be doing the write up on the antenna? should i assume that the motor is still ok if i hear it attempting to move the attena up and down?

First off, congratz on your 4runner :D

1. not sure but good question. someone w/ a 3rd gen will be able to help ya out.
2. do a maintenance check. check fluids, change plugs if not changed, check belts, battery. Basically everything that needs maintenance, check. (tires, brakes). You really can't do much to help mpg but keep your right foot light on the pedal. k&n filters won't do you much good from what I've heard. If you're looking to upgrade your air filter, look into Amsoil or stock (which is what I like the most).
3. Just replace the antenna. If the motor makes sounds then you're in good shape. Regardless, they're both relatively easy to fix.

GOod Luck

thanks lance. do you prefer the stock filter over the amsoil? also...what are the signs that the belts need to be replaced and what does teh avreage timing belt job run. I have a feeling its never been replaced.

I just like stock because I it works. Why change something that already works well. (odd logic but it eh)

your belts should last you 90k I think (don't remember exactly) but a quick visual inspection by any mechanic is easy to do. YOu can even check for yourself to see if it's worm/torn/fraying. If the belt looks like it's new and doesn't look like it's cracking and falling apart, you have no problems.

changing plugs are relatively easy (just make sure you space them to the stock spec). Fluid check is easy as well as brake check.

Good luck.

lance, is there anything that i need to worry about in terms of teh CA inspection process. here in ny its very easy. the whole thing takes about 5 min.

changing plugs is fun...if you have tiny hands. the drivers side sucks because you can barely get anything in there to turn them. then the passenger side all has coil packs on them. plus the air intake is in the way. you have to remove the air intake, move some vaccum lines, and then remove the coil packs to get to the plugs...have fun

Good question, if you add everything a Limited has, how can you tell. I think one way to tell is look at the passenger sun visor mirror. If it a lighted mirror, ( the light comes on when the lights are on) it is a limited. If the mirror has no light, then it is a SR5. I doubt someone would go to that much trouble to add that to a SR5.

It seems strange that I have ABS brakes, dual air bags, cruise control and no lighted mirror, but they have to separate models somehow.

yea and also, i havent ever seen a limited with out its badges unless it was, dare i say, "tricked out"(i.e. tinted windows, 35 inch spinning mirrors, huge spoiler) most people de-badge for the purpse of style and looks, and how your describing it, he made no mods in the direction of looks or style. The previous owner didnt have any reasons to de-badge it if he has the SR5 badges still on also. I think if i were a limited there would be a limited badge on the back and on the panel in between the backseat window and rear side window on each side also. I have seen SR5's with the leather and running boards. Does it have wood grain? or painted(not plastic) running boards? what kind of rims? just a couple of things to think about, not absolute ways to prove your case but additives.

weird, i thought i posted in this thread, but i guess not.

its a limited if:

1) it has wood trim inside
2) it has auto climate control (no dials / slide bars)
3) it may or may not have heated seats

its got the wood grain interior as well. not sure about the sun visor. one thing i did pick up on is that most of the limited had two two tone paint right? mine is all black. its prob just an sr5 with every option. the person even had the dealer put on the integrated hella fog lights.

it should have the plastic molding on the bottom of the doors, yes.

also, which rims do you have? 6 spoke or 5 spoke?

5 spoke is limited, in your year...

mystery solved then. six spoke wheels and no auto climate control. its an optioned out sr5. thanks for the info fellas.
