New to Me 2001 SR5

Just bought this '01 SR5. I've had it for about a week and I have some ideas for changes I want to make. First thing is to drop the running boards, they aren't in good shape and I'm really just not a fan of how they look. Next is wheels and tires. The finish is flaking on the wheels and as of now my plan is to have them powder coated to a darker gray color. It also has a mismatch set of tires on it so I've been trying to figure out what size tires I can run. I'd like to go as big as possible without any real modifications. I had a '95 previously that I ran 32s on at stock ride height and I loved how it looked so I'm hoping to find the same kind of look for this one. If anyone can help that would be greatly appreciated. I'm gonna miss my 2nd gen but this is definitely an upgrade. This one has the locker too, so that's cool.

Looks pretty clean!! I'm definitely on board for the running board delete

Thanks! It's got 221k on it but I picked it up for $3500 and it runs like a top. The interior is in great shape as well so that was nice to see. It's been so hot I've been a little tentative to get out there and start on it

Nice 4runner. I was in the same boat as while back. I have a 2002. Of the 3rd gens, they have the shortest springs. For the most part, you can easily go up one tire size 265/75/16 and be fine. I have BFG KO2s and I like em. But I also would be happy with the Cooper ST Maxx, or maybe Goodyear Duratracs I suppose. I think there are a few that have run slightly larger (taller) tires on their rigs, Unner, but you should be fine with 265/75/16 tires. But you really just need to think ahead to what you want to be doing with your rig and how much time will it spend on pavement vs. The dirt.

255/75/17's fit without a lift, just have to trim a little off that inside corner on the flare that attaches to the bumper, but it looks like your's doesn't have flares so you'd be good.

Also, just FYI, since yours is a 2001 it doesn't have the highly sought after rear differential locker, but instead the center diff lock. So when you push the 4WD button you're actually in AWD and safe to drive on dry pavement, wet roads, etc, you're not truly in 4WD until you lock the center diff. Then you'll get binding if you drive on dry pavement.

01-02 didn't get the option for the rear differential locker, but they do come with the traction control stuff that simulates a locker by braking the wheel that is slipping, etc.

Very nice deal you got! I agree that you can easily go up to 265/75/16 which is almost pretty much a 32

Oh okay, that makes sense. Pretty interesting how these can all be so different and so similar at the same time
