new to me 4runner...which one?

I have my choice narrowed down to 2 4runners.
A. 06 sport black with 26k asking 19,995 V6
B. 08 sport gray with 51k asking 23,995 V8 certified

I would like to know which one is a better deal? I'm not going to be towing anything more then a 2 place snowmobile trailer. So I don't really need the v8, but I kind of like the idea. I'm having a baby soon so money will be a factor. Don't now if the extra money is worth it.

my vote is for (B) I chose the V8 and I couldn't be happier; HOWEVER from what it sounds you got a (+1) on the way...you should save the money for (Jr. College Fund) and pick up the V6...unless you plan to MOD... I think the V8 starts with a few more essential goodies other then that I like the higher rev V6. The V8 will cost more overall in the long run {Gas, Timing Belt, etc.} (IMO) I think its the better choice if you plan to abuse it a little.


I'm not familiar with the pricing over that way but I picked up my 03' V8 for $10K and I was looking at V6 deals (04-06) $11K-22K.. again probable not helpful...

I think the BEST deal is the 08 for the money....I feel like you can do better on the V6 pricing though...(not sure what options, Etc.) if you can get the V6 for 1-2K less its a better deal then the V8 (again IMO)

thanks for the reply. I don't plan on doing any real off roading. It will probably be more of a grocery getter now with the baby on the way. However I will be doing a cheap lift with a little bigger tires nothing crazy. I think I could get the v6 for anywhere between 17-18. Any difference in the years between the 06 and 08?
 
V8!! Purely because the transmission is so smooth. Also there isnt much difference in mpg and later on you may regret getting the v6. Just my thoughts:)

so you guys would say go with the v8 even though its a little more expensive and has 25000 more miles. Never had a 4runner should I worry about the mileage?
 
The one with the better maintenance record.

Maintenance record is KEY to buying a used vehicle. If someone bought a co-workers vehicle based on year, mileage and price alone - they'd be VERY VERY sorry. He leases a new vehicle every other year. Puts about 40k miles on it and NEVER EVER does any maintenance...that includes oil changes, tire rotation...you name it...NOTHING. Doesn't even clean it. It's a mess when he trades it in on a new lease. The dealer then cleans it up and puts it on the lot at the same asking price of a similar vehicle (year and mileage)..but which was very well maintained.

So would you rather buy a 2yo vehicle with 40k miles that's NEVER even had an oil changed while under lease...or a 2yo vehicle with 50k miles that was meticulously maintained by the dealer????
 
all things equal (condition/maintenance history/etc) I would go with the 06 V6. You could buy an aftermarket warranty and still have less money in it.
 
Keep the money for a aftermarket warranty and put it in a bank account. Extended warranties are nothing but a VERY VERY VERY expensive insurance policy. I've NEVER bought one and NEVER EVER will.
 
The V8 is one of the best engines built and is so smooth. However, most people don't keep their cars forever and if maintenance is equal I would get the newer and lower mileage V6 in this case.

NO. I picked up mine with 112k and didn't even give it a second thought - the thing rides brand new. Good service history and routine maintenance going forward you'll be fine.

I bought my '06 V8 with 109,545 last summer. Sits just over 115,000 now and not a single issue. I did the timing belt, transmission fuid, and an oil change since having it. The timing belt service was never done so it was necessary. Not cheap, but important. I have zero regrets going with a V8.

That's really a shame. You mentioned this in another thread as well. I can't believe how irresponsible and and careless some people can be with cars.
 
Yes i would go with the v8 even though its more and has more miles. Agreed maintenance is key! If the v6 was babied go with that but being equal the v8 that engine will still be around even after the whole body has disintegrated.
 
I would go with the V8. I have a friend that has the V8 and like others have said, it rides very smooth. I like it a lot. Also, 26K compared to 51K is not much of a difference this early in the game. It's 2 years newer and am going to assume it was a highway vehicle. Plus I like the gray :)
 
Obviously get the one with the better maintenance record. If they're equal the V6 will be cheaper to maintain in the long run.
 
Looking at the years, mileage and prices, the V6 is the better deal. However if you think you need the V8 for towing or something, that's a different story. I've owned 2 V6's and love them
 
thanks guys for all the responses. I need to find out about the maintenance on both vehicles before I make my decision. That is very important like you all have stated. I like the idea of the v8 and the toyota used certification. But not sure if its really worth it to me for the price difference. I guess I will have to leave it up to the boss to decide. Make her feel like she has some input:rofl:
 
Go drive both. I'm doing that this weekend since I'm in the same boat as you. You may like the way one drives much better than the other.
