New to t4r and need help with front diff

I have a 2002 4runner sr5 4wd with 204k on it. Bought it with 200k and i think it still drives great. I noticed that it was leaking black fluid on my driveway so I took it to the shop thinking it was a front diff gasket seal. Turns out that the front carrier assembly has a crack. The shop owner told me that it was only about 1/2 of a pint low on fluid and everything looked good on the inside. He didnt charge me anything and told me to find a used one as the only ones he could find were $700(shipping incld.). Ethically, he told me he couldnt do the work as it was too expensive. (these guys are honest and fair)

So now I need to find one so i can take it back in and get it fixed. Ive been looking on here, ebay, craiglist, etc.

I need some direction on how to find the correct part. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks in advance

Go to car-part.com and the part you are searching for is a carrier assembly. Then it will bring you to a page with options for what kind of differential whether it be a front or rear, the gear ratio, and options such as ADD. Choose your correct gear ratio and then you can search through all of the options to find one nearby or one that is low in cost. Lowest I have found around me is $150 which is way better than $700. I don't know how much installation would cost but it's a place to start.

How do I find out what gear ratio and if I have ADD or not?

I believe you can take your VIN into a local Toyota Dealership, and with that information provided, they should be able to give a build sheet. The build sheet should state F&R gear ratios.

you can chase that info down with the dealer.... or do the spin test (you should be able to find how if you search). its going to be the most accurate anyway. sure the dealer knows what gears were in there when it left the factory, but there's a chance (though this chance is slim to none) that the gears in there are not stock.

i would do the spin test just to be 100% sure, but that's just me.

Thanks everyone for the help! Is there a way to determine whether I have ADD without going to the dealer for a vin lookup?

if u take ur fronnt diff apart n look inside on the ring gear thw ratio should be printed on it or count both the pinion n ring gear teeth n devide it
