new to the 4Runner family, please help

Hi, I just bought a 1997 4Runner Limited 2WD. I love the looks of this model and got a great deal on it but I have some questions.

First, it has 135,000 miles on it. It was bought from a single owner who seems to have kept it in great shape inside and out. Should I be worried about the timing belt? What other maintenance issues should I worry about to ensure it doesnt die on me? It seems to run strong but the accelerator is stiff and sluggish. You have to really push it in when at a dead stop to go somewhere, is that typical of a 4runner in general? I'm used to having cars more sensitive at the pedal. The tranny shifts nice and smooth too, has anyone had any transmission problems? Finally, I ran a carfax report (i have ~20 more days if anyone needs a free report) but I have a major concern! both my car and my friends car have been in accidents yet the Carfax shows no indication of any accident whatsoever. My friend has been in 3 MAJOR accidents with damage to the frame, suspension, and overall body and nothing shows up! It makes me think, whats the point of carfax anyway? Do you have the V6 or 4cyl?

If you do have the maintenance records you can go to the link below to see wht needs to be done. If you dont you should defintely look at the timing belt and spark plugs. I can't comment on the performance of the 3rd gens as I haven't owned one.

You might also want to check out yotatech for 3rd gen info, pretty good.

It goes to 120k miles and then rotate again.

Wow that was quick. Thanks for the reply. It is a V6. So the timing belt should be changed ASAP or should I wait until I have problems..

ASAP, belt should have been changed at 90K. :happy bda
